TERRE HAUTE — Tom Jones is the 2013 Show-Me’s/Terre Haute Golf Association city men’s champion.

Jones was in a three-way tie for first place in the event after one round and trailed Chris Cassell by two shots and Phillip Myers by one going into Sunday’s final round played in mild, overcast conditions at Hulman Links.

Jones still trailed Cassell by a shot when the leaders made the turn on Sunday, but he gained the lead on the back nine and maintained it to claim his eighth city title and the first since 2008.

He finished with a 1-under-par 287 score, one shot better than Cassell with 288. Jones shot 71 in the final round, Cassell 74.

Ted Kaperak also shot 74 in the final round and took third with 293. Myers shot 81 and tied Travis Turpen for fourth with 296.

Jones shot 34 on the front nine and 37 on the back nine with two birdies and one bogey on Sunday.

“Chris got a really bad break on 14 when his tee ball went behind a tree. He make a heckuva 5 there, and I parred there,” said Jones, who is 60.

“At my age, I just wanted to get in the final group. It’s a thrill,” said the champion.

Cassell, meanwhile, finished second for the third straight time in the city. He did not play last year.

“I made a bad shot on 17 and he took the lead. That was basically it,” said Cassell, who won the city in 2009 and finished second the next two years — each time by a shot.

Cassell was 35-39 on Sunday.

Turpen shot 73 in the final round and finished in the top five for the second straight year.

This year, all players who declared for the championship division played from the blue tees in all four rounds.

Playoffs were needed to determine the winners in two of the other championship-division flights.

Scott Givens bested Preston White to win the third flight and Devon Klutey defeated Dan Gmelich to win the second flight.

Other flight winners were Kyle Stevenson and Jeff Lewellyn.

Fred Modesitt edged Steve Paquin and Steve Prevo by one shot to win the championship flight of the white-tees division.

Ryan Bland won the first flight.
