Men’s city tourney concludes this weekend

Six players within three shots of lead with 36 holes left

TERRE HAUTE — Play winds up in the Show-Me’s/Terre Haute Golf Association men’s city golf championship this week.

The third round will be played at Rea Park today and the final 18 holes at Hulman Links on Sunday.

Tom Jones and Phillip Myers share the 36-hole lead, each with scores of 145. One shot behind are Darrell Shouse and Travis Turpen, while Ted Kaperak is fifth at 147 and Chris Cassell sixth at 148.

Jones has won the city seven times, Kaperak nine and Cassell once. The other three leaders are gunning for their first titles.

A year ago, Rich Schelsky — who is not in the tournament field this season — had a one-shot lead over Turpen after 36 holes and seven other golfers were under par going into the third round. Jones was third while Kaperak and Ryan Roscoe were tied for fourth.

Kaperak shot 70 at Rea Park in the third round to take a two-shot lead over Schelsky and led Turpen and Jones by three strokes, and Kaperak went on to win his ninth city championship.

One difference between this year and last is that all players who declared for the championship flight are playing from the blue tees.

Two players had sub-par rounds at Rea Park in the first round and Myers had the only sub-par score — 70 — at Hulman Links.

Rea Park pro Dave Kennedy expects to see some good scores this weekend if wind is not a factor as it was last week.

“Generally, it has gone about as expected. It’s good to see Phillip in the mix,” Kennedy said.

Strip sodding in the fairways at Hulman Links has been completed and work is in progress in the landing areas, meaning there may be some adjustments on some holes.

Sixteen players are in the championship flight.

Don Alumbaugh and Kyle Stevenson lead the blue-tees first flight while Steve Paquin has a four-shot lead over Fred Modesitt and Chuck Adamson in the white-tees flight.

Numbers for the tournament are about the same as last year.

• Coming up — Events for juniors and women golfers are on the schedule next week.

A two-day clinic and tournament on Friday are slated at Idle Creek for juniors.

The annual Terre Haute Women’s Golf Association match-play city tournament will be played at Hulman Links.

Qualifying on Friday will determine pairings for match play with the championship set for July 29. Entry fee is $45 and includes luncheon on the final day.

A Mountain Dew Tour event also is scheduled for Thursday at the Country Club of Terre Haute.
