Ex-ISU women’s gymnastics coach adds to laurels

Indiana Hall of Fame includes Treiber among its 2013 honorees

TERRE HAUTE — Being inducted into a Hall of Fame is nothing new for former Indiana State University women’s gymnastics coach Margit “Grete” Treiber.

Already a member of the National Association of Women Gymnastics Judges Hall of Fame (1980), ISU Athletic Hall of Fame (1984), the U.S. Gymnastics Hall of Fame (1988) and the USA Gymnastics Region 5 Hall of Fame (2011), Treiber said she was thrilled to learn that the relatively new Indiana Gymnastics Hall of Fame wanted to include her in its Class of 2013.

Induction ceremonies for Treiber (coach, judge and contributor), Richard Albershardt (athlete) and Betty Heppner (contributor, judge and coach) will begin at 6 p.m. today with a banquet in the Athenaeum Turners’ Kellersaal Room at 401 E. Michigan St., Indianapolis.

The program will consist of a dinner and presentations. Tickets can be purchased at the door for $25 apiece.

“I am absolutely delighted,” the 85-year-old Treiber told the Tribune-Star on Friday. “Indiana is very proud of what I did. This state wants to be able to say ‘she belongs to us.’”

Originally, Treiber “belonged to” Hodmezovasarhely, Hungary, where she was born. She came to ISU in 1959 as a graduate assistant and started the university’s gymnastics program in 1965. She also coached some track and cross country during her time as a Sycamore.

“I was asked to come to teach ballroom dancing,” Treiber recalled about her early years at Indiana State. “[Terre Haute] was a lovely city when we came. It was just a joy to walk downtown.”

Over the years, her Indiana State gymnastics teams were perennially among the top 20 in the nation. She also was a noted judge, coach and lecturer on the international level.

Treiber served as the ISU women’s gymnastics coach until the university axed the program (along with men’s gymnastics, men’s and women’s bowling and wrestling) in 1986. But she remained on staff as an associate professor of physical education until she retired in 2004.
