METRO ROUNDUP: Riley 9s advance to Cal Ripken state semis

Post 346 splits twinbill at Newburgh

GREENFIELD — The Riley 9U All-Stars advanced to the semi-finals of Cal Ripken Central Indiana Babe Ruth League state tournament by defeating Connersville 5-2 at James Whitcomb Riley Park Saturday.

Riley will face New Palestine in first of two semi-finals games at 11 a.m. today. In the other semi-final game, Shelby County with face Mooresville. The winners will play for the title at 3 p.m. today.

Riley was out-hit, but had timely hitting. In the third inning Riley scored on a two-run home run to left center by starting pitcher Gabe Owen.

Blake Steidel’s single to center field in the bottom of the fifth inning scored Jaden Thomas to break a tie and put Riley ahead 3-2. Steidel and teammate Rylan Schneider then scored on a triple by Max Scamihorn. 

Thomas was the winning pitcher.

.Riley 9U was the top seed in the tournament after defeating Mooresville B 10-0 and Clay County 19-1 in pool play on Thursday.

* Hambrock wins title — At Greenwood, Lauren Hambrock of Terre Haute won the girls 16-under singles title of the South Central Indiana Junior Tennis Open that concluded Saturday.

Hambrock defeated Allison Himes of Indianapolis 6-1, 6-0 in the finals.

* Results in — At Rea Park, the 2013 Children’s Museum Flighted Mixed Doubles Tournament was conducted recently.

The 21st annual tournament included 42 players in three divisions. All proceeds will be donated to the Terre Haute Childrens’s Museum.
