TERRE HAUTE —
Terre Haute South and Northview take respective records of 10-5 and 11-5 into the Greencastle Regional today.
Coach Bill Blankenbaker’s Braves will play Seeger at 4:30 p.m., while coach Emily Goff’s Knights will take on Crawfordsville about 6 p.m.
Defeating rival Terre Haute North in a sectional championship is always a momentum builder for South. The Braves feature a young lineup with freshman Lauren Hambrock at No. 1 singles and only two upperclassmen in the lineup. The No. 1 doubles team is made up of senior Miranda Camp and junior Nicole Howe.
“I feel very comfortable with the team I have,” Blankenbaker said. “I like how my No. 1’s playing. No. 2 better than she was at first of year and so is No. 3. Both doubles are strong. Going to be interesting to see how far we can go,” Blankenbaker said.
Northview has had a strong season, finishing runner-up at 5-1 in the Western Indiana Conference and knocking off Greencastle to win the sectional.
The Knights will play an Athenians squad that blanked them 5-0 during the regular-season. Crawfordsville lost a regular-season match against Terre Haute South by a narrow 3-2 margin.
“It’s going to be very tough for us,” Goff said. “It’s been a good season. We had a rough one last year at 9-8. This season has been much better.”
Today’s winners will meet Wednesday at 5 p.m. for the regional championship and the opportunity to play in the Center Grove Semistate. Action will be played indoors on the campus of DePauw in case of inclement weather.
