PUTNAMVILLE — Terre Haute North won 10 events Tuesday night while winning the Indiana High School Athletic Association girls track and field section at South Putnam High School for the 12th straight year.

Led by four-event champion Keirra Porter, North overpower second place South 195-116.

Greencastle, placed by double-event champ Colleen Weatherford, finished third with 71 points, followed by Northview with 54 points. Cloverdale finished fifth with 38 points, followed by South Putnam with 32, North Central and North Putnam with 26 points, Sullivan 21, West Vigo 18, Riverton Parke 17, Clay City 8 and South Vermillion 2.

The first four places in each event advance to the regional meet at Evansville next week.

“All the way across I was just very pleased,” Terre Haute North coach Mike Dason said.

“Tonight is go out and see what we can do and move on to the next level. Place is what we’re looking for tonight, but next week [at the regional] we will go for time because whatever our time is is what’s going to get us into a good seed.”

Porter, a sophomore, unleashed a North school record leap of 18 feet, 8 inches to win the long jump, breaking the record of 18-3, set by Kylie Hutson.

“[The jump] felt amazing. It felt good to even jump it,” Porter said.

“She’s been working at it and during practice she has been getting [jumps] that far, we just needed it to happen during a meet,” Dason said.

Porter also won the 100-meter hurdles in 15.24 seconds and joined forces with Summer Scank, Sarah Fears and Keeliegh Stigall to win the 4x100 relay in 50.99 seconds.

North also got a first place from Keeliegh in the 100-meter dash, from Sydney Dickerson in the 400 and Chanlie Mundy in the 3200-meter run.

North swept the relays. The national-ranked Patriot 4x800 relay team of Dickerson TaPring Goatee, Jessi Conley and Lindsay Welker cruised to victory in 9:4983.

North’s 4x400 relay team of Welker, Dickerson, Goatee and Jordan Gomes-Kuehner won in 4:07.25.

Kelsey Thomas and Carson Smith gave the Patriots a one-two finish in the high nump, Thomas winning at 5-2.

Rachel Gutish nearly took down another record in the pole vault. The North junior won the event at 11 feet, but took a shot at 11-feet-10 inches, just missing the mark.

“I was hoping Rachel could get 11-10 and get the school record and get both of Kylee [Hutson’s] records. Records are there to be broken,” Dason said.

The showdown races between Greencastle’s Weatherford and North’s Lindsay Welker, TaPring Goatee and Chanli Mundy never materialized.

Weatherford went out fast and pulled away from Welker and Goatee to win the 800 in 2:12.56. Welker took second in 2:14.07 and Goatee third in 2:16.22.

And in the 1600, again Weatherford started fast, took and early lead and physically less than 100 percent Mundy settled for second. Weatherford won in 5:15.29 and Mundy finished in 5:24.14.

“That’s my favorite thing is getting out fast. It kind of gives me the mental edge, makes me feel [the competition] has to in extra work to catch up,” Weatherford said.

Mundy came back to dominate the 3200-meter run in 11:30.76.

Keeliegh led a one-two finish for North in the 200-meter dash in 27.46 seconds with teammate Spencer Grim taking second.

South was led by 300-meter hurdles champion Tasia Brewer in 47.61 seconds. Brewer also took second in the 100-hurdles in 15.94 seconds.

“Today I was really focused on the 100hurdles. In the regional the 300-hurdles will be my main focus to get to state,” Brewer said.

Northview’s Leeanna Knight is headed back to the regional after winning the 100-meter dash in 13.09 seconds

North’s Brianna Burgess won the discus with a throw of 109 feet, 2.5 inches.
