Indiana State produced two champions during the opening day of action in the Missouri Valley Conference track and field championships Friday at Drake.
Freshman John Mascari, a Terre Haute native, won the men’s 10,000-meter race and Nicole Hope won the women’s pole vault for the second time in three seasons.
Mascari and Sycamore teammate Tristan Selby ran step-for-step through much of the first half of the race before Mascari pulled away and never looked back, finishing in 30 minutes, 50 seconds. Selby finished 11th with a time of 31:57.13.
Hope, who also has an indoor title on her resume, needed just two jumps and was the only competitor to clear 13-feet-2 1/2. Teammate Richelle Kimble was second for the third straight season with a height of 12-10 3/4.
After two scored events, Southern Illinois leads the men’s standings with 35 points, followed by Wichita State (22), ISU (20), Illinois State (18), host Drake (14), Northern Iowa (5) and Bradley (2).
In women’s standings, Wichita leads with 33 points after three events followed by Indiana State (26.5), Southern Illinois (26), Northern Iowa (19.5), Illinois State (10) and Drake (2).
Kimyanna Rudolph also scored for the Sycamores in pole vault, finishing fifth at 12-2 3/4. Hannah McKnight was 10th (11-9) and Alyssa Markiewicz and Lauren Rice each cleared 11-3 and were 11th and 14th respectively.
For the men, Brandon Pounds was second (212-10) and Justin Applegate eighth (185-7) in hammer throw and Jordan Colanese eighth in javelin (186-8).
Felisha Johnson was fourth for the Sycamores in women’s hammer throw with a season-best 195-4.
Men’s and women’s 10,000-meter runs were contested later Friday.
