ISU finishes Saturday’s suspended game; Sunday’s game gets rained out

The Tribune-Star

TERRE HAUTE — Rain fell on Indiana State’s baseball parade all weekend … literally and figuratively.

Heavy showers fell on Bob Warn Field on Sunday as the Sycamores tried to resume their Missouri Valley Conference series against Evansville. The plan was to resume Saturday’s suspended game at 1 p.m. and play Sunday’s scheduled game afterwards.

ISU and Evansville started an hour earlier than scheduled and were able to finish the resumed game which Evansville won 3-1. However, the precipitation became heavy, and the Sycamores and Purple Aces were unable to play Sunday’s scheduled game.

Saturday’s game was resumed in the seventh inning with Evansville having a runner on first.

ISU used pitcher Kurt Kudrecki and got out of trouble in that frame, but couldn’t avoid it in the ninth. Evansville scored two runs in the ninth inning as a result of a Tyler Wampler throwing error to take a 3-0 lead.

The insurance runs proved crucial. ISU scored one run in the bottom of the ninth as Jacob Hayes’ RBI triple drove in Mike Fitzgerald. ISU couldn’t muster the runs needed to tie the contest.

Evansville had scored its first run on Saturday when Chris Pearson hit a solo home run in the third inning.

The loss drops sixth-place ISU (18-20, 7-10) two games behind Evansville (19-29, 9-8) in the Missouri Valley Conference standings. The Sycamores are 61⁄2 games behind first-place Wichita State.

ISU plays at SIU-Edwardsville on Tuesday. It plays host to Eastern Illinois on Wednesday and hosts a weekend nonconference series starting Friday against Alcorn State.
