PREP ROUNDUP: Stewart gets three more hits for West Vigo

WEST TERRE HAUTE — Travis Reese won his first game of the season for West Vigo partly on the strength of a 3-for-4 day by Kyle Stewart as the Vikings defeated North Central 5-0.

Reese pitched a one-hitter in a game shortened to five innings by rain.

Highlights — For West Vigo, Kyle Stewart was 3-for-4 with a RBI and run scored; Lucas Fagg was 2-for-3 with a RBI and a run scored; Jordan Schaefer was 2-for-3 with a run scored.

• Rockville 1, Irvington 1 — At  Rockville, Ben Cunningham tossed a two-hitter, scored two runs and stole two bases in an 11-1 Rockville victory against Indianapolis Irvington.

Highlights — For Rockville, Ben Cunningham was 1 for 2 with 2 runs and 2 stolen bases, while tossing a two-hitter; Tyler Rapp was 2 for 2 with 3 runs, a double and 2 RBI; John Brown 2 for 2 with a double, 3 runs and 3 RBI; and Nick Waltz 2 for 3 with 3 RBIs.

Next — Rockville (10-7) plays Saturday in a doubleheader at Seeger.

• South Vermillion 13, Riverton Parke 1 — At Mecca, Kaden Lawson had a home run and five RBI for the victorious Wildcats.

• Clay City 8, Union 0 — At Clay City, Hunter Wolfe and Colten Harbour combined to pitch a three-hit shutout for Clay City.

Wolfe (2-1) allowed two hits, struck out five and walked one in six innings and Harbour allowed one hit and struck out two in the seventh.

Harbour was 2-3 at the plate with a two-run double and Noah Denker was 2-4 with a double. Wolfe also had a double for the Eels.

After three scoreless innings, Clay City (4-9) scored one in the fourth on a Union error. The Eels put five hits together with two Union errors in the sixth inning to break open the contest.

Highlights — For Clay City, Hunter Wolfe pitched six innings and Colten Harbour the seventh in a three-hit shutout. Harbour was 2-3 at bat with a double and two RBI and Noah Denker was 2-3 with a double. Wolfe also had a double. For Union-Dugger, Snead, Ellis and Reynolds each had one hit.


• Shakamak 8, Owen Valley 3 — At Spencer, Shakamak scored four in the first inning and never looked back in a victory.

    Rachel Welker is the 2014 Terre Haute Women’s Golf Association city champion. The former Terre Haute North standout defeated 10-time winner Cara Stuckey 5 and 4 in sunny, warm conditions Monday at Rea Park.

It’s called Terre Haute Boys & Girls Club Park now, but the venerable ballpark was the site of some classic high school baseball regional games in the 1970s when coach Don Jennings and Terre Haute North’s local dynasty fought off stiff challenges from the best the rest of the Wabash Valley had to offer.
