Metro Roundup: Former Marshall athlete named HCAC pitcher of the week

Anderson  University’s Nolan Schaefer, a junior from Marshall, Ill., has been named Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference Baseball Pitcher of the Week, unfortunately at Rose-Hulman’s expense.

Schaefer allowed just one hit in seven innings as the Ravens beat Rose-Hulman 4-1 on Sunday.

Donnie Waters had the only Engineer hit until the ninth, when Josh Hoeing and Bobby Newman singled and Andrew Benitez had an RBI double.

Rose, 14-20 overall and 11-9 in the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference, has a 6 p.m. home game Tuesday against Franklin. Anderson is 21-16 and 15-7.

Track

• ISU wins seven — At Indianapolis, several Indiana State athletes competed Saturday at Butler’s Stan Lyons Invitational.

Winners were Austin Schultheis in javelin (168-foot-3), Sean Dennis in shot put (50-11), Ray Skamay in 400-meter hurdles (53.37 seconds), Ray Humphrey in the 100 (11.14), Ioanna Koitsidou in women’s high jump (5-8), Whitney Walker in women’s shot put (45-6 1/2) and Taylor Gilles in 100-meter hurdles (14.65).

Golf

• Rose still fifth — At North Bend, Ohio, Rose-Hulman remained fifth Sunday at the halfway point of the Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference men’s tournament.

Final two rounds will be played this coming weekend at Hulman Links.

Auto racing

• Racing halted — Rain halted action at  Crossroads Dragway on Saturday after two time runs had been run.

Fun Night runs are slated Friday with the first Pink Ladies race on the schedule. regular racing is set for Saturday, including juniors, with time runs at 12:30 p.m.

  • Two homers help Rex emerge victorious over Springfield 3-1

    The Terre Haute Rex rank second among the 12 Prospect League baseball teams in extra-base hits and Zach Welz, Kaden Moore and Tony Rosselli added to the Rex 2014 haul at Bob Warn Field in a 3-1 win over Springfield on Thursday.
    Kaden Moore put up the Rex’s first run with a line-drive home run over the left-field wall in the second inning. Welz added his homer in the seventh — with a no-doubt blast to left to add an insurance run.

  • Colts suffer another season-ending injury in guard Thomas

    Indianapolis Colts coach Chuck Pagano must be getting tired of being the bearer of bad news.
    First it was running back Vick Ballard, who suffered a torn left Achilles during practice last Friday. And on Wednesday, offensive guard Donald Thomas went down with a torn right quadriceps muscle.

  • Colts notebook: Rookie Mewhort ready to compete

    So just who is Jack Mewhort?
    Well, the Indianapolis Colts rookie is slated to take over as the team’s new starting left guard due to the season-ending quad injury suffered Wednesday by veteran Donald Thomas.
     A former standout at Ohio State, the 6-foot-6, 308-pound Mewhort was selected by the Colts in the second round of this spring’s NFL draft. And since Indianapolis didn’t have a first-round pick, the Toledo, Ohio, native is getting a lot more scrutiny that most second-rounders taken in the draft.

    The men’s schedule includes several in-state rivalries and a double round-robin conference slate for first-year head coach Rusty Loyd.

  • Rex fall to Miners 4-3 in 11 innings, forcing them into tie with Quincy for first place

    The West Virginia Miners tallied the go-ahead run with two outs in the top of the 11th inning Wednesday night at Bob Warn Field, then held Terre Haute scoreless in the bottom half of the frame to post a 4-3 baseball victory and shove the Rex into a virtual tie for first place with the Quincy Gems in the Prospect League West Division second-half standings.
    Terre Haute is now 18-8 in the second half, while Quincy is 19-9.

    The Vigo County Education Foundation (VCEF) will host its 22nd annual “Fore the Kids” golf scramble Friday at Rea Park.
    The scamble will begin at 1 p.m., with lunch being served at noon. This year’s tournament chairperson is Dave Piker, a current board member for the VCEF.
    There will be 36 teams comprised of business people and community members as well as teachers, principals and administrators from the Vigo County School Corp.
