Metro/Prep roundup: ISU softball team ties record, takes series

---- — Indiana State stole three bases to tie the Missouri Valley Conference softball record of 100 in a single season and beat Evansville 4-2 Sunday at Price Field for a conference series win.

Mackenzie Connelly tied the record with a delayed steal in the fourth inning and also hit a tie-breaking two-run homer in the bottom of the sixth to support winning pitcher Halle Humphrey.

Sacrifice flies in the first and fourth innings by Shelby Wilson and Abbie Malchow had given the Sycamores their first two runs. Connelly and Kelsey Montgomery both went 2 for 3.

ISU, 16-34 overall and 5-19 in the MVC, wraps up its regular season next weekend with a home series against Southern Illinois. UE is 20-28 and 11-12.

Auto racing

• Too wet — Rain and wet grounds played havoc with U.S. Auto Club race schedules in the area.

The Sumar Classic for Silver Crown cars Sunday at the Terre Haute Action Track was called off; organizers hope to reschedule the race.

At Putnanville, sprint car racing was halted following qualifying and the running of one heat race at Lincoln Park Speedway on Saturday. Officials also hope to reschedule that program.

Chase Stockon picked up a point in qualifying, and he and Hunter Schuerenberg share the lead in the sprint totals with 343 points.



Track

• ISU wins seven — At Indianapolis, several Indiana State athletes competed Saturday at Butler’s Stan Lyons Invitational.

Winners were Austin Schultheis in javelin (168-foot-3), Sean Dennis in shot put (50-11), Ray Skamay in 400-meter hurdles (53.37 seconds), Ray Humphrey in the 100 (11.14), Ioanna Koitsidou in women’s high jump (5-8), Whitney Walker in women’s shot put (45-6 1/2) and Taylor Gilles in 100-meter hurdles (14.65).
