NEWTON, Ill. —
Marshall opened Class 2A Newton Regional boys basketball play Monday night with a 60-35 victory over Cumberland.
The Lions hiked their record to 22-8 and will take on No. 1 seed Robinson, 25-4, in a second-round game tonight. Tipoff is at 7:30 p.m.
The Lions scored the first five points of the contest and closed the first period with a 13-4 to hold an 18-9 lead after eight minutes. Taylor Maurer had nine points for the Lions in the quarter.
Maurer, Cray Bloodworth and Drew Morris all had two fouls in the second quarter but Marshall still outscored the Pirates 13-11 for a 31-20 advantage at halftime. Walker Berner had nine points for the Lions in the quarter.
Marshall outscored the Pirates 19-4 in the third quarter and took a 50-24 lead into the final frame. Bloodworth and Maurer each had six points for the Lions in the third period.
Thomas Sisson’s basket gave Marshall its biggest lead at 57-29 as all the starters left the game for the Lions.
Maurer led the winners with a double-double, scoring 17 points and snaring 10 rebounds. Berner finished with 15 points and Sisson had 10 points, four rebounds and six assists.
Colton Ingram led the Pirates with 11 points. Cumberland finished 3-25, losing to Marshall three times.

• Neoga 67, Hutsonville-Palestine 47 — At Dieterich, Ill., Neoga won in Class A action, Jake Baker had 28 for Neoga. Dylan Webster tallied 14 and Tyler Heflin 10 for H-P.
• Sullivan, Ill. 60, Paris 40 — At Sullivan, Ill., the host team bested Paris 60-40 in 2A action. Austin Temples had 19 and Ryan Spencer 13 for the Tigers.
