No. 1 Rockville gets win No. 20 at West Vigo

ROCKVILLE — Rockville got win No. 20 in high school boys basketball Saturday night, defeating West Vigo 66-49 in the Jim Mann Green Dome.

The top-ranked Class A team got back-to-back victories to improve to 20-0 and will take a break, not playing again until Feb. 15 when the Rox face Attica.

West Vigo will be busy next week, facing Sullivan on Thursday in a key Western Indiana Conference contest and meeting Marshall, Ill., on Saturday with the junior varsity game beginning at noon.

The Vikes got off to a good start against the Rox, scoring the first seven points of the game and holding a 15-7 lead after Aaron Kirby hit his second 3-pointer of the period.

The Rox closed out the first quarter with a 9-0 run and scored the first 13 points of the second stanza to go up 29-15, forcing West Vigo turnovers with their press, and had a 36-18 lead at the half.

Lane Mahurin  had 11 of his team's points in the first period and 19 in the half while Gary Ulrich had six in the second stanza.

Mahurin finished with 24 points, six steals and a game-high seven rebounds. He hit 9 of 19 shots and 6 of 10 free throws.

“Lane has been productive … since committing to Indiana Wesleyan, he has played relaxed,” said Rockville coach Dave Mahurin.

Ulrich was the other Rockville player in double figures with 18 points and he had three steals. He was 7 of 10 from the field with four 3-pointers and made his last five shots.

Jordon McFall had nine points for the winners, missing one of his five shots.

The Rox connected on 36 of 52 shots from the field for 69   percent including 6 of 13 3-point shots. They also had a 29-24 edge on the boards and had just seven turnovers, one in the first half.

Coach Mahurin was glad to get two wins and says he's looking forward to a week without a game.

“It was a very nice weekend. It's always nice to get a couple wins,” he said.

He said the keys for his team were the same as they have been all season.

“We were able to force turnovers with our defense. Once we got on track offensively and play with a little confidence, we were on a roll,” he said.

Kyle Stewart had 16 points for the Vikings and Kirby had eight.
