BLOOMINGTON — Two champions and a school-record six semistate entries from Terre Haute South were the highlights among Wabash Valley high school wrestlers competing Saturday at the Bloomington Regional.

Phoenix Adams, ranked 13th in the state at 138 pounds, and Cody Helms, Indiana’s 20th-ranked 152-pounder, were the sectional winners for the Braves, and coach Gabe Cook thought his team could have had one more.

Other winners included Northview’s Shane Ryann at 113 and Sullivan’s Cory Orndorff, who avenged a sectional loss — his only one of the season so far — by pinning Terre Haute North’s Eric Elia in the championship match at 126.

Notably not winning was Northview’s fourth-ranked 285-pounder Justin Sampson. Sampson suffered his first two losses of the season but will advance to the Evansville Semistate with a fourth-place finish.

Other South wrestlers who will be at Evansville’s Ford Center next Saturday are 113-pounder Darin Pemberton, second at 113; David Lewis, fourth at 120; Ian Newton, fourth at 145; and Duane Deerwester, fourth at 170. Ryan Uppal placed fifth and is the alternate wrestler at 106.

Cook said he was upset with himself for Pemberton’s loss to Ryann. The South wrestler had an early 6-1 lead before being pinned.

“I should have cautioned [Pemberton] to be more conservative,” the South coach said Saturday. “[Pemberton] was working for a fall, and [Ryann] got him in a headlock.”

As for his two champions, Cook added, “I don’t think either one got scored on all day [although yielding points on escapes].”

Besides Ryann and Sampson, Northview will be represented next week by Cale McCoy, second at 106, and Jesse Miller, fourth at 195. Stephen Gibson of the Knights was sixth at 120.

Elia will be joined in Evansville by Tyler Gilmore, who was third at 152 pounds for the Patriots, and Ethan Edington, also third at 220. North got a fifth-place finish from Ryan Moshak at 182, while Gavin John lost his only matches at 113.

Sullivan will have three wrestlers at Evansville. In addition to Orndorff, Nick Byrd advanced by placing second at 132 and Jonathan Sullivan was fourth at 160. Colt Thompson of the Golden Arrows was fifth at 138.

West Vigo’s only place-winner was Doug Wilkins, sixth at 126. Owen Valley got second-place finishes from William Newforth at 145 and Larry Shaffer at 170 and a sixth-place showing by 285-pounder J.R. Robertson.

Host Bloomington South was the team champion with 240.5 points, with Jasper second at 156.5. South placed third (99.5), Northview fifth (72), Sullivan seventh (64), Owen Valley ninth (51) and North 10th (49).

• North Montgomery results — At the North Montgomery Regional, Turkey Run’s Jeff Girdler placed second at 182 pounds and will move on to the New Castle Semistate. Tucker Evans of the Warriors was sixth at 285.

Also advancing is Rockville’s Jacob Thurman, fourth at 138. Tanner Bishop of South Vermillion was fifth at 106, Tate Lindsey of Rockville was sixth at 145 and Robbie Davis of North Vermillion was fifth at 220.
