PREP ROUNDUP: Marshall boys down Red Hill in conference tourney

MARSHALL, Ill. — Host Marshall scored the last 10 points of the first quarter Monday night and went on to a 53-34 win over Red Hill in Little Illini Conference Tournament consolation-bracket play.

Marshall is 15-7 and will play either Lawrenceville or Olney in the consolation semifinals Wednesday at Casey.

Red Hill took an early lead at 8-4 but Marshall ended the first period ahead 14-8.

Keegan Steele had eight of Marshall’s points in that run and scored eight straight points in a 12-0 run by the Lions in the second stanza, and they held a 26-15 lead at halftime.

Marshall had a 37-24 lead going into the fourth quarter. Steele had five more points in the period and the sophomore finished with 21 points to lead the Lions.

Walker Berner had nine points for Marshall, getting seven in the last quarter, and Taylor Maurer had eight points and six rebounds.

Dalton Murray had 10 points for the Salukis.

LIC tourney play continues tonight with Robinson playing Newton and Casey taking on Flora.

Next — Marshall (15-7) plays Lawrenceville or Olney at 7:30 p.m. CST Wednesday at Casey. Red Hill is eliminated from the tournament.

n Pairings set — Pairings and schedules have been set for the Illinois girls high school basketball tournaments.

Marshall is a No. 1 seed in the 2A regional to be played at Marshall with the winner advancing to the sectional at Newton.

Feb. 4 — Paris (4) vs. Arthur (5), 6 p.m., followed by Tuscola (3) vs. Macon (6)

Feb. 6 — Pana (1) vs. Game 1 winner, 6 p.m., followed by Sullivan (2) vs. Game 2 winner

Feb. 7 — championship 7:30 p.m.
