West Vigo holds off South Vermillion to cap its Pizza Hut Classic

TERRE HAUTE — With a tough a stretch of tough games to open the second half of the season, winning its final game of the Pizza Hut Wabash Valley Classic was important for West Vigo on Saturday afternoon.

“We didn’t put too much importance on it, but as a coaching staff we felt it was very important for us to come in and play well. We thought the first two nights we didn’t play near the way we are capable of playing,” West Vigo coach Joe Boehler said.

Led by Kyle Stewart’s 15 points, West Vigo closed out the 2012 portion of its season with a 49-46 win over South Vermillion. West Vigo is now 5-4 and South Vermillion is 2-6.

South Vermillion’s Kaden Lawson led all scorers with 16 points, seven rebounds and five steals.

After leading 29-27 at halftime and 38-35 after three quarters, the Vikings opened the fourth period with an 8-2 run to build a 46-37 lead with 1:30 to play.

Alex West put back a rebound to start the West Vigo run and when he missed a free throw Cade Lindsey grabbed the board for the Vikings. Lance Stonebarger banked in two off the glass then Aaron Kirby converted a pass from Stewart into seven-point lead. Free throws by Lindsey and Stewart capped the run and the Vikings led by nine.

But South Vermillion responded with a 7-0 run and closed the gap to 46-44 with 27 seconds to play. Kaden Lawson scored a bucket, made a steal and passed to Dru Strayer for a three-pointer and Jordan Branz netted a lay up to bring the Wildcats within two points.

West Vigo’s Stewart and Lindsey converted on 3-4 free throws in the final 18 seconds to secure the Vikings’ fifth win of the season.

“It’s tough to come in here on the third day, being in the consolation bracket after you’ve lost your first two games, it’s hard to get kind of excited to play sometimes,” Boehler said.

West Vigo shot 41 percent (18-of-44) for the game and made an important 9-of-16 free throws (56 percent). South Vermillion, missing several shots under the basket in a 6-for-18 opening quarter, recovered to shoot 47 percent (19-of-40) and hit 3-of-4 free throws.

  • Andy Amey: Just a small trip to talk about this time

To paraphrase Carl Spackler, the heavy stuff’s not going to come for quite awhile. So while it’s true that I’m back from a week’s vacation, it’s not time — yet — for the big vacation column. Trips to Noblesville, Brunswick and Reelsville, while providing some nice family time, don’t really have the cachet to fill newspaper space.
