Metro roundup: ISU’s Theisen, Swift, Wise honored again by MVC

The list continues to grow for Indiana State’s track and field program.

Twelve consecutive weeks have passed with at least one Sycamore being named named to the Missouri Valley Conference Athlete of the Week award. Seniors Mary Theisen and Greggmar Swift, as well as sophomore Katie Wise, were honored this week.

This was Wise’s record tenth honor of the 2013-2014 season, but fifth of the outdoor season.

Wise showcased her talents at the Drake Relays this weekend with a very busy couple of days. She began with a 100-meter time of 11.33 seconds in the preliminary round, which was the fastest time of the weekend. She then ran a key leg of the 400 relay team that qualified for the final with the eighth fastest time of 45.48. The first day ended with a very impressive showing in the 4 x 200-meter relay, as Wise anchored the team home to a fourth place finish in 1:35.53. Notre Dame won in a time of 1:34.54. Wise came back to place third in the final of the 100 in a time of 11.78 and finished the day with a strong leg in the 400 relay, as they placed sixth in 45.31.

Theisen earned her sixth honor of the 2013-2014 season and fourth of the outdoor season.

Theisen showcased her talents in a big way this weekend, as she won the discus and placed second in the shot put at the Drake Relays. Theisen started off the weekend with a huge win over a quality field in the discus with a throw of 174 feet even. She then had a great battle with the No. 7 nationally ranked thrower Dani Bunch of Purdue. Bunch ultimately got the victory with a throw of 56 feet 3 3/4 inches, as Theisen placed second with a throw of 53-5 3/4 inches. Theisen ranks 11th in the shot put and 23rd in the discus nationally.

Swift earned his ninth honor of the 2013-2014 season, but his third outdoors.

Swift had a day of ups and downs at the Drake Relays, literally. Swift qualified for the shuttle hurdle relay and 110 hurdle finals with the fastest times of the day Friday. Swift had a time of 13.65 in the 110 hurdles to easily outdistance the elite field that included the number two hurdler in the nation, Vanier Joseph of Illinois. In the final with the lead going into the final hurdle, Swift hit the hurdle and fell down, crashing into the track. Luckily his momentum allowed him to cross the finish line, but Joseph beat him in a time of 13.68. Swift fell to second in 13.89. Swift currently holds the third fastest time in the NCAA this year with his 13.43-second performance.

Going back to cross country season this year, the Sycamores have earned this award 33 times with Wise earning the honor 10 times.

The Sycamores will compete in the Billy Hayes Invitational at Bloomington this weekend, with a select few athletes competing in the Stan Lyons Invitational at Indianapolis.
