Metro roundup: Rose men win seventh straight HCAC track title

ISU splits, sets records — At Price Field, Indiana State sophomore Abbie Malchow finished Saturday 4 for 4 at the plate as Indiana State split with Drake on Senior Day.

In the process, the Sycamores broke school records in runs scored with 209 and runs batted in with 179 and their 25 wins is fourth most in program history.

In Game 1 Saturday, which Drake won 9-3, Malchow ended up 2 for 2 with a home run and an RBI and junior Megan Stone was 2 for 3 with a double.

In the second game, which ISU won 5-3, the Sycamores jumped out to an early lead in the bottom of the first inning when freshman Kassie Brown drew a one-out walk before Crissman hit an RBI double to score Brown. Stone then drove in Crissman with an RBI double to make it 2-0.

In the bottom of the second, junior Yvette Alvarez extended the Sycamores’ advantage to 3-0 when she crushed her second homer of the season over the left-center-field wall.

The Sycamores struck again in the bottom of the fifth when Crissman led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Stone. Malchow then hit a line drive into the right-center-field gap for her first career triple to score Crissman. Senior Shelby Wilson then scored Malchow on a squeeze to make it 5-0.

Drake answered in the top of the sixth with a three-run home run but could get no closer as sophomore Taylor Lockwood pitched a seven-inning complete game. She allowed four hits and two earned runs with five strikeouts.

For the day, Malchow was 4 for 4 with a triple, homer, three RBIs and two runs scored and Stone was 3 for 5 with two doubles.

The rubber match of the three-game series will take place at noon today at Price Field in the final home game of the season for the Sycamores (25-24 overall, 7-15 MVC). Drake is now 16-29 and 8-12 respectively.
