Golf season gets going Saturday with Northview Invitational

TERRE HAUTE — Most high school boys golf teams in the area will get the season started Saturday in the Northview Invitational at Forest Park.

New players will be in the lineups for many of the teams. Sullivan and Greencastle are the leaders in returning players.

One of the veterans for Greencastle is Luke Brotherton, who tied for 24th as an individual qualifier in the state finals last season.

Nathan Pirtle is back for Sullivan. Now a junior, he qualified for the state his freshman year.

There will be shotgun start of 1 p.m. for Saturday’s competition with 12 teams expected in the field.

Checking out team prospects:

Northview — Players back with varsity experience for Josh Trout’s Knights include senior Austin Bowen, juniors Keegan Roembke, Seth Payton and Nick McCollum and sophomores Blake Bennett, Sam Grimes and Austin Roloff. Trout says freshmen Shane Lunsford, Asher Mace and Luke Weaver have shown potential in practice.

“Shane is a tremendous ball striker. When his short game comes around, I believe he will be an asset to the team,” the coach said. He says players played in junior golf tournaments and local tournaments since last season to work on their games.

Sullivan — Nathan Pirtle is one of four regular starters back for the Golden Arrows. He is joined by sophomore Colt Kuppler, senior Luke Willis and sophomore Riley Pirtle. Junior Jace Moody was a starter in some of the matches.

Coach Doug Boyd says players who could contribute are senior Jake Pirtle, junior Stone Jackson and freshman Noah Cox. Other freshmen on the roster are Lex Moody, Patrick Badger and Tommy Cox.

Sullivan was the Western Indiana Conference champ and qualified for the regional, placing third in the Linton Sectional. Nathan Pirtle, Kuppler and Willis all earned all-conference honors.

Terre Haute North — Senior Adam LaGrange is the one player back from last year’s team that placed 13th in the state finals. He tied for 39th as an individual.

Abe Nasser Jr. is in his third season of coaching the North boys teams and also is the girls coach. He says LaGrange should be joined in the lineup by sophomore Luke Young, freshman Cam Lewellyn and junior Gunar Alumbaugh.

Vying for the other spots are juniors Tyler Tuberosa and Dominic DeSantos and sophomore Nathan Higbee.

North qualified for the state by tying Brownsburg for third place in the regional played at Country Oaks and having a better fifth score.

Terre Haute South —  Chris Cassell is in his 11th year as the coach at South.

Players back from last year’s team that tied North for first in the sectional, both shooting 304, are seniors Ryan and Drew Cahill and sophomore Gregory Stultz.

Others on the roster include sophomore Braxton McIntyre, junior Darin Pemberton and freshman Jacob English.

Cassell says the Bob Arnett Invitational will played April 26 at Rea Park.

West Vigo — Travis Turpen is in his sixth season of coaching the West Vigo boys team.

He says junior Nick Leek is his top returning golfer. “He lost in a playoff for a regional spot a year ago and has the capability of being a really good player,” says Turpen.

Brandon Long was projected to be the No. 2 player for the Vikings but has moved to Gibson Southern.

Other returnees back are juniors Tyler Wilson, David McClain, Clayton Baugh and Austin Roach and sophomore Nate Keith.

Freshmen and other newcomers are Kyler Wallace, Kyle Marshall, Garrett Harris, Jacob Higgins, Ethan Corenflos and Logan Benefiel.

“The freshmen have been working hard. I would not be surprised to see them push the upperclassmen for spots in the postseason,” says Turpen.
