Dans top Rex 5-2 in 10 innings

TERRE HAUTE — The Danville Dans took advantage of Terre Haute Rex errors and walks Monday night to pull out a 5-2 win in extra innings at Bob Warn Field.

Danville snapped the 2-2 tie with a three-run10th inning off losing pitcher Nate Arnold.

Rex starter Kurt Kudrecki and Danville’s Spencer Herrmann controlled the game into the sixth inning. Kudrecki gave up four hits and one run through five innings before being replaced by Kyle Zimmerman in the fifth with the score tied 1-1.

The Rex managed just five hits off Herrmann and winning pitcher Trey McNickle (3-0).

Kyle Kemp, Tyler Wampler, Rickey Sanchez, Owen Conway and Atlee Schwab had one hit each for the Rex. Schwab came through with an RBI double in the fourth inning.

Kempf legged out an infield single in the 10th inning to extend his hitting streak to 18 games.

Danville’s 11-hit offense was led by catcher Taylor Banks with three hits, including two doubles.

Danville got the first three hits of the game and scored the first run. The Dans’ ninth hitter Sam Maus and lead-off hitter Jacob Thomas connected for back-to-back singles to right field. Maus score on an infield ground ball out.

After three scoreless and hitless innings, the Rex connected for two hits and a game-tying run in the fourth.

Sanchez drove a ground ball between third base and shortstop for the Rex’s first hit. Sanchez caught the Dans by surprise, stealing second base and moving to third on a grounder to the right side of the infield. Sanchez scored when Schwab doubled into the right-center-field gap.

The Dans took a 2-1 lead in the sixth on a walk, single and Banks’ second double of the night.

The Rex tied the score 2-2 in the sixth when Wampler led off with a single, stole second and scored when the Dans misplayed Evans hard-hit ball to second.

The Rex travel to Quincy, Ill., today to start a three-game series.
