Ramblin’ Reck: Regular season winding down in high school basketball

TERRE HAUTE — Time flies when you’re having fun … and playing basketball.

It’s hard to believe that the regular season ends this week for high school basketball teams that we cover in Illinois. The postseason begins next Monday.

Paris, Casey and Marshall have the top marks and Robinson has had some good wins playing a tough schedule.

Paris and Robinson will be host teams for Class 2A regional action next week. Casey is the top seed at the Robinson site while Sullivan is No. 1 and Paris No. 2 at Paris.

Paris was slated to meet Effingham on Tuesday. The Tigers took a 15-8 record and five-game winning streak into the contest.

The weather forecast certainly looked a lot nicer this morning. Looks like all the games on the schedule in Illinois and Indiana will be played. Indiana teams will close out the regular season next week and the draw will be made for the tourney on Sunday.

ISU looks good — Indiana State continues to look good in the weekly RPI rankings.

The Sycamores are 56th in the list. Kansas remains No. 1 and Wichita State is seventh, while Wisconsin is the top Big Ten team at 6.

Some other totals: Creighton 8, St. Louis 11, Belmont 61, Illinois 91, Indiana 102, Northwestern 104, Notre Dame 105, Northern Iowa 106, Purdue 108, Missouri State 109.

In last week’s Sagarin rankings, ISU was 81. Some other totals: Michigan State 4, Creighton 10, Wichita State 15, St. Louis 24, Indiana 53, Illinois 64, Nebraska 71, Notre Dame 78, Purdue 94, Butler 98, Northern Iowa 114.

St. Louis defeated VCU last week for a 23-2 mark and 17 in a row.

In one of the polls last week, Wichita State had teams in the Top 25 of both the men’s and women’s polls.

Tom-Cattin’ It — A memorial now is in place for the fatal 1977 University of Evansville plane crash. Terre Haute South grad Michael Joyner was one of the players on the plane.

• Franklin College football coach Mike Leonard has been chosen to be on the U.S. staff for the World University Games football competition in Sweden in May.

• Jeff George Jr. of Warren Central has signed with Illinois, where his father played college football.

• The Indiana-Kentucky all-star basketball games will be played at Transylvania in Lexington, Ky., instead of Louisville.

• Pat Knight has been let go as basketball coach at Lamar. He had a 29-62 record in three seasons, but Lamar is 6-50 in the past two seasons and is 3-22 this year with a 2-11 record in the Southland Conference.

• More than $28,000 was raised for Special Olympics in the annual Polar Plunge at Indiana State University last week.

• Winners in Indiana girls high school basketball sectional finals played Monday included North Knox and Vincennes Rivet, which won for the sixth time in the past seven years.

• LaPorte La Lumiere — now a member of the IHSAA — was ranked No. 8 in this week’s USA Today Top 25 boys prep cage poll. Indianapolis Tech dropped down to 47th after being 12th last week and Carmel was 45th.

• In case you missed it, the East defeated the West 163-155 in the NBA All-Star Game, giving Frank Vogel of the Pacers the victory.

    A trio of Indiana State basketball student-athletes have been named to the 2013-14 National Association of Basketball Coaches Honors Court as announced by the national organization. Honored from Indiana State were Lucas Eitel, Justin Gant and Jake Kitchell.
