Metro: Marlow, Morris, Wilhelm among early signees

TERRE HAUTE — A few Wabash Valley high school athletes signed national letters-of-intent to attend Division I or II colleges Wednesday, the first day for the NCAA’s early signing period in several sports.

At Terre Haute South, senior softball shortstop Kelsey Marlow signed with Western Illinois University.

South softball coach Dwayne Stout said Marlow has compiled a .416 batting average with 86 runs scored, 58 runs batted in and 53 stolen bases during her three-year varsity career that will conclude with her fourth year in the spring of 2014. She’s a two-time all-Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference selection, two-time South Golden Glove winner and 2012 team Most Valuable Player.

“Beyond the numbers, Kelsey is the rare player who is never satisfied and although one of the most talented players, she is still one of the first to arrive to practice and one of the last to leave,” Stout noted. “She has worked hard for all of her success and she is one of the few players who can beat an opponent with her bat, her speed or by inspiring her teammates to play harder. And if that doesn’t work, she will try taking hits and runs away with her glove. … Kelsey Marlow is a total pleasure to coach and total package as a player.”

Also at South, swimmer Christian Wilhelm signed with Illinois-Chicago. He is a school-record holder in three events, a two-time MIC champion and three-time state finalist.

South senior Jackson Bertoli, the 2013 boys cross country state champion who’s verbally committed to run cross country and track at Indiana University next season, told the Tribune-Star that he plans to sign in February.

Over at Northview, 6-foot senior hitter Shelbi Morris signed to play volleyball for Division II Southern Indiana.

Northview volleyball coach Scott McDonald said Morris racked up 380 kills, 147 digs, 45 aces and 17 blocks as a senior in 2013. Also, she finished as the school’s all-time leader in wins, second in kills and fourth in aces.

“She has developed her overall game through hard work and dedication to get to the next level,” McDonald said of Morris. “She has also become a tremendous leader on the floor.”

The early signing period will end next Wednesday. Any other signees during this period should have someone affiliated with the high school email the Tribune-Star at with all the information.
