Boys basketball teams hit court for jamboree

TERRE HAUTE — Fans and coaches got a preview look at this year’s boys high school basketball teams Friday night in jamboree action at Terre Haute North.

South and South Vermillion were paired in the four quarters of play and were 63-54 winners over North and West Vigo.

South bested West Vigo in the first quarter 23-10. Gregory Newton had six points for the winners and Aaron Kirby had the same total for the Vikings.

North was a 17-5 winner over South Vermillion in the second period. Calvin Blank led the Patriots with seven points while Nathan Luft had three for the Wildcats.

South was an 18-13 winner against North in the third quarter. Jeffrey Turner tallied 10 for the Braves, giving him 12 for the night, and Austin Lewis led the Patriots with five points.

Officials called 21 personal fouls in the action between North and South.

South Vermillion warmed up in the last quarter of the night to defeat West Vigo 17-14. Kaden Lawson led the Wildcats nine points. Kyle Stewart had six for the Vikings.

Terre Haute North and South and South Vermillion will open the season Wednesday. North is at home against Evansville Central while South Vermillion is at Clay City and South goes to Bloomington North.

West Vigo tips off the season Nov. 30 at South Vermillion. Its game with North Vermillion has been postponed due to the Falcons’ football tournament play.

  • Farris, Amies win Brazil Open titles

    Troy Farris and George Amies were two winners in the Brazil Open concluded Sunday at Forest Park.
    Farris claimed his 10th title in the event with rounds of 65 and 68 for 9-under-par 133. He went 30-35 in Sunday’s round and had an eagle and nine birdies in the two days.

    Phegley is a third-time All-Star in the International League, while Marshall, Ill., native Derek Eitel was named to his first Triple-A All-Star game. The Rose-Hulman graduate and right-handed relief pitcher for the Reno Aces has put up impressive numbers in the Pacific Coast League. Eitel has a 2.70 earned-run average with 60 strikeouts in 46 2/3 innings for the Diamondbacks’ top minor-league team.
