PREP ROUNDUP: West Vigo girls basketball cruises past Sullivan

Lexus Elkins, Shyanne Elkins combine for 28

WEST TERRE HAUTE — For the first time in more than five years, West Vigo has defeated Sullivan in girls high school basketball.

Lexus Elkins poured in 15 points, Shyanne Elkins contributed 13 and McKenzie Little added 11 to lead the host Vikings over Sullivan 57-40 in Western Indiana Conference action Tuesday night inside the Green Dome.

For Sullivan, Jenni Wilkes was the leading scorer with 10 points.

The last time West Vigo knocked off the Golden Arrows was Dec. 2, 2008, when it won 26-25.

Next — West Vigo (4-1 overall, 1-0 WIC) will be at home Friday to face South Vermillion, starting at 6 p.m. as part of a girls-boys doubleheader. Sullivan (1-4, 1-1) will play host to North Central on Saturday.

• Mooresville 39, Terre Haute North 31 — At Mooresville, the host Pioneers increased their winning streak to four games by defeating the Patriots.

North’s only double-figure scorer was Adrienne Pritchard with 10 points.

    After dropping a pair of games to Missouri Baptist on Wednesday, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods beat Lindenwood-Belleville 9-7 and 1-0, both games in eight innings, on Thursday afternoon.
    Sarah Burnham’s seventh-inning homer in the first game tied the score 4-4, and the Pomeroys took a 5-4 lead later in the inning on an RBI double by Brooke Jordan before the Lynx tied the score in the bottom of the inning.

  • METRO ROUNDUP: ISU softball splits pair in Florida

    Pitching dominated Tuesday’s opening day of play in the Rebel Spring Games for the Indiana State softball team, which defeated Bucknell 2-0 before falling 2-0 to Creighton.
    “The girls did a great job in the first game getting a couple runs,” ISU coach Shane Bouman said. “We leaned on [sophomore] Yvette Alvarez who pitched really well. We probably got as much as we could out of her and probably should have changed earlier so put that on me. We have a couple little things we can clean up and get a little better and we will be ready to go tomorrow.”

    Host Rose-Hulman came back from an early six-run deficit in the first game Saturday and went on to a 13-12, 7-1 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference baseball sweep over Mount St. Joseph.
    The wild opener featured a Rose-Hulman comeback from an 8-2 deficit and included 18 hits and two school records for the Engineers.

    Yvette Alvarez’s one-hit shutout capped a dominant day of pitching Saturday as Indiana State swept a Missouri Valley Conference softball doubleheader at Missouri State by scores of 6-1 and 4-0.
    “We pitched well,” coach Shane Bouman said. “Both Taylor Lockwood in the first game and Yvette Alvarez in the second game threw great. When you pitch good and you play good defense and get some key hits, good things are going to happen.
