METRO ROUNDUP: Arop makes Games debut for Canada

Indiana State forward Manny Arop played six minutes in Canada’s 84-69 victory over Sweden in its opener at the World University Games on Sunday in Kazan, Russia.

Arop was 0-for-2 from the floor and had a steal. Canada moved to 1-0 in Group B, a group that includes the United States, Czech Republic, Australia, United Arab Emirates and Sweden.

Play resumes for Canada today as it plays UAE. The United States demolished UAE 140-46 in another Group B game on Sunday.

• Junior City begins Tuesday — The Junior City golf tournament begins Tuesday at Rea Park. Here are tee times:

Tennis

• Hambrock wins 16U title — At Jeffersonville, Lauren Hambrock of Terre Haute won the girls 16-under singles title at the Jeffersonville Junior Tennis Open on Saturday. Hambrock defeated Helen Fox of Evansville in the semifinal and Emma Wood of Seymour 6-1,6-1 in the finals.

Auto racing

• Clauson prevails — At Belleville, Ill., Bryan Clauson was a triple winner  in U. S. Auto Club midget racing on Satuday at Belle Clair Speedway.

Clauson won his heat, a qualifying race and led the final three turns to win the 30-lap feature. Jerry Coons Jr. led the first 27 turns and was second.

Chris Bell was fifth and has a 25-point lead over Clauson going into a July 30 race in Kansas.

  • Patton stays hot at Martinsville Fair

    Freddie Patton Jr. was the leader for the second day in a row in harness racing action at the Martinsville Agricultural Fair.
    The ace driver and trainer was in the bike for two winners and was nipped at the finish in a third race with 2-year-old trotters and pacers in the seven races on the card run in sunny, pleasant conditions.

  • Terre Haute North Little League wins pair, advances to title games

    Terre Haute North’s Little League All-Stars won in two different age divisions Wednesday evening at West Terre Haute’s park, propeling both teams into District Four tournament championship games.
    In 11-and 12-year-old action, North defeated the host team 11-4 as Taneer Pittman went 3 for 4 with a pair of home runs and Kaleb Hannahs also went 3 for 4 with a double. For West Terre Haute, Trenton Broderick went 2 for 3.

  • Metro roundup: Shouse team places 5th in AAU nationals

    The Indianapolis-based George Hill Rising Stars youth basketball team — which includes Dexter Shouse Jr. of Terre Haute — placed fifth in the boys seventh-grade division of the AAU national tournament that took place last week and concluded Sunday.
    According to Shouse’s father, Dexter Shouse Sr., young Dexter had games with 30 points (vs. Houston), 24 (vs. Memphis) and 20 points (vs. CP3 North Carolina). Standing 6 feet, 3 inches tall, he played point guard and forward.

    University of Kentucky baseball star A.J. Reed of Terre Haute and Florida softball standout Hannah Rogers have been named 2013-14 Roy F. Kramer Southeastern Conference Male and Female Athletes of the Year, according to a voting by the league’s athletics directors.
    “A.J. and Hannah are true examples of outstanding student-athletes,” SEC commissioner Mike Slive said Tuesday. “They have competed at the highest level of collegiate athletics, and through their hard work, dedication and commitment to excellence, have been successful in their endeavors. They are fine representatives of their universities and this conference.”
