Terre Haute track and field athletes shine at Patriot Invitational

TERRE HAUTE — The Terre Haute North and Brown County girls and boys came out winners Saturday in the Patriot Invitational Track and Field Meet at Terre Haute North High School.

North’s boys, led double-event champion Jordan Moothery, Ben Fletcher and Nana Dadzia won the Class 4-5A Meet 78-74 over Mt. Vernon (Fortville), while Brown County’s boys won the Class A-3A Meet 111-75 over Rockville.

The Patriot girls, led by two-event champ Keirra Porter, won the Class 4-5A Meet 84-57 over Terre Haute South. And Brown County’s girls overpowered Seeger 179-95 over Seeger in the Class A-3A Meet.

It was a day to shine for the Terre Haute athletes. With unlimited entries in the nearly seven-hour long meet, coaches gave nearly all their varsity athletes an opportunity to compete.

Terre Haute South’s Riley Stohler, Spencer Danielson, Ryan Hannaford and J.C. Farnsworth competed Friday night in the Miracle Mile Meet at Franklin Central High School, then ran and won the 4x800 relay Saturday morning before taking the rest of the day off.

And South’s Jackson Bertoli is slowly recovering from surgery and is not expected to run until next weekend.

On Saturday, North’s Moothery won his first meet as a long jumper. Moothery leaped 21 feet-11 for first place over teammate Dominick Farr’s 19-5. Moothery and Farr joined Ben Fletcher and A.J. Smith to win the 4x100 relay in 44.73 seconds over Mt. Vernon.

Fletcher won the 300-meter hurdles in 44.30, while Dadzia won the 800-meter run in 2:06.11, the teamed with Maciej Tomaszewski, Floyd Johnson and Payton Martinek to win the 4x400 relay.

Lafayette Jeff’s DeParques Jones won both the 100 meter dash (:11.15) and the 200 dash (:23.05).

“Mainly, being [our] second track meet, I was kind of seeing where everybody was. Everybody did pretty good. We still have a lot more work to do. The second meet of the year, I really can tell anything right now,” first-year North coach Ernest Holman.

North’s girls were led by Porter’s firsts in the long jump at 16-feet-9, 100-meter hurdles in a 16.09 seconds and her 400 relay run with Keeliegh Stigall, Stephanie Williams and DaShana Johnson in 51.18 seconds.

“My goal is to get back to where I was last year in the first meet of meets [of the season],” Porter said.

Johnson also won the 100-meter dash for North in 12.86 seconds.

South boys and girls had a good and someone lucky day in the high jump. DeShon Heyen and Brooke Deighton each won by a jump off.

Heyen cleared 5-feet-10 to win over South teammate Koty Hall. Deighton and North’s Carson both cleared 5-feet-2, but couldn’t go higher, so the bar was dropped. Deighton won at the lower height.

In the Class A-3A meet, Riverton Parke’s Daniel Norlag and South Putnam’s Ariel Higgins were double winners.

Norlag won the 100 in 11.73 seconds and the 200 in 23.99 seconds, while Higgins won the 100-hurdles in 16.35 seconds and the 300-hurdles in 48.50 seconds.

Terre Haute North’s teams have a busy week ahead. The Patriots will compete at Ben Davis on Tuesday, travel to South on Thursday, then go to the Brown County Invitational on Saturday.
