College Report: Haley Chambers making noise in OVC softball circles

Two Wabash Valley natives are again making big news for the Southern Illlinois-Edwardsville softball team.

Former Riverton Parke and Cascade standout pitcher Haley Chambers was recognized for a string of dominant performances in the circle by being named Ohio Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week on Monday.

The Cougars improved their record in the month of April to 8-1 after a perfect five wins in five games last week, with Chambers — a sophomore — leading the charge in three shutout victories.

Chambers’ dominant week was highlighted by her third career no-hitter Saturday in a 10-0 victory over Southeast Missouri.

The sophomore also tossed shutouts in a 2-0 win against Bradley last Thursday and in a 3-0 triumph against Southeast on Sunday.

Through her three starts last week, Chambers was responsible for just 10 baserunners (six hits, four walks) over 19 innings of work. She posted a combined 29 strikeouts in her three starts as well, giving her 152 Ks on the season to rank second in the OVC.

Earlier this week, Chambers was leading the OVC in innings pitched (151.2) and was fifth in opposing batting average (.181). She also was tied for the league lead with eight OVC wins.

On April 5, Chambers tossed her second career no-hitter in a 1-0 win over Tennessee Tech. She handcuffed TTU for seven innings while recording 10 strikeouts. The no-hitter was the 30th in school history.

“I felt as confident today as I have all season and I pitched the way I know I can,” Chambers said. ”We’ve had some good days of practice recently and we performed well today.”

Not only did Chambers lead the Cougars from the circle, she also knocked in the game’s only run. The sophomore laid down a bunt single in the fourth inning to score Jordan LaFave.

SIUE coach Sandy Montgomery was impressed with what she saw from the reigning OVC Freshman of the Year.

“Haley threw great today,” Montgomery said. “She had great command and presence, and she got the job done. You can’t do much better than throwing a no-hitter.”

Montgomery, a native of Casey, Ill., won recently won the 900th game of her 26-year career as the Cougars defeated Saint Louis 4-1 at the Billiken Sports Complex.

Montgomery is the 39th head coach in the history of NCAA softball to reach the 900-win plateau and has earned all of them at SIUE. Her 900 victories are 15th most among active NCAA Division I coaches.

“This is all about the coaching staffs and players that I’ve had over the years,” Montgomery said. “The head coach gets the credit a lot of the time, but without everyone else contributing, it wouldn’t be possible. There’s been a lot of players who have put a lot of time and effort into this program during my time here.”
