Knee injury puts Colts' Collie down for rest of season

INDIANAPOLIS — The news for wide receiver Austin Collie wasn’t good Monday.

No, it wasn’t another concussion. But Indianapolis Colts coach Chuck Pagano confirmed that Collie — who has incurred at least four concussions since the start of the 2010 season — has been placed on injured reserve and is sidelined for the remainder of the season.

Collie suffered a torn right patellar tendon in the third quarter of Sunday’s loss to Jacksonville. The injury occurred after he caught a 6-yard pass from rookie quarterback Andrew Luck. It was Collie’s only catch of the game and, as it turns out, the year.

Collie had been sidelined previously this year after incurring a concussion against Pittsburgh in the second preseason. He had seen some practice time in the run-up to the team’s regular-season opener at Chicago but was not cleared to play in the game. He also didn’t play in the home opener with Minnesota.

“It’s a pretty significant injury. It will require surgery and he will go on [injured reserve],” Pagano announced. “I spoke with him [Sunday] night. As I said [after the Jaguars game], I just feel awful.

“We feel awful about the loss but [in] the big picture you feel awful for a guy like Austin that has battled through so many things in his career. And then to go out and see this happen. You hate to see anybody get injured on the football field. But I feel really bad about Austin.”

Collie had missed seven games in 2010 after a series of concussion-related issues occurred, including three confirmed concussions. The former BYU standout, who was a fourth-round draft pick in 2009, has recorded 173 career receptions for 1,845 yards and 16 touchdowns. He had 54 receptions for 514 yards and a TD last season.

Final game for Collie with Colts? His appearance with the Jaguars could have very well been his last game in an Indianapolis uniform.

With an injury such as the one Collie suffered Sunday, the usual recovery time is anywhere from six months to one full year. His contract with the Colts expires at the end of the current season. This latest injury situation may make it easier for the team’s front office to cut ties next spring.

Other injury news — Cornerbacks Vontae Davis (ankle) and Justin King (groin) will be listed as week-to-week heading into Indianapolis’ bye weekend. Both were sidelined in the second half of the Jacksonville game and did not return.

Center Samson Satele (knee) had started the Jaguars game but only lasted one half. He was trying to play after initially being injured in the first half of last week’s win over Minnesota. Satele is also listed as week-to-week.

“[Satele] just couldn’t hold up. He went out there, gutted it out as long as he could, gave it everything he had. [He] said he couldn’t push off on the thing anymore. Rather than do any more damage, Mike [McGlynn] has gone in and done an admirable job at center. [Satele will] be day-to-day rehab-wise,” Pagano said.

“Vontae got the ankle and he’ll be week-to-week. Hopefully it’s not as severe. They’re going to read the MRI a little bit later this evening and see where that’s at. Justin King went out with a groin injury. He was holding up one of their gunners and the things went out on him as he was running down the field. So he’ll be a week-to-week situation.”

Freeney, Reitz returning — There is some positive news regarding injuries. Outside linebacker Dwight Freeney and offensive guard Joe Reitz are expected to resume practicing this week.

Freeney has been sidelined since the opening week after suffering a sprained ankle against Chicago. He has not practiced or played since.

Reitz, meanwhile, has been bothered by a gimpy knee since the start of training camp. He started the first preseason game but has not played since. He tried to practice the week before the Bears game but was inadvertently kicked in the knee. The former Hamilton Southeastern two-sport performer recently had minor surgery on the knee.

“They are going to get them back on the field this week. We will ease them back into things. I don’t know how much full-speed stuff they will do in our team drills,” Pagano said Monday. “But certainly they will take part in individuals and the trainers will put them through some normal stuff when they bring these guys back, as far as drill work on the field, things like that.”

Inside linebacker Pat Angerer (foot) may also return for light practice this week. Angerer, Freeney and Reitz might be available to play in Indianapolis’ Oct. 7 home game with Green Bay.

Since the Colts do not have a game this week, the team will have practices today and Wednesday. Pagano will give his players the remainder of the week off in order to rest up for the remainder of the season.
