WILMINGTON, N.C. —
Indiana State’s baseball team rebounded from a 3-2 setback at the hands of UNC-Wilmington on Friday to sweep a doubleheader Saturday, taking the first game 11-5 and posting a 6-1 win in the nightcap.
Today’s originally scheduled game was moved up to Saturday due to the possibility of strong thunderstorms moving into the Wilmington area.
ISU (14-2) won its third weekend series of the year by taking two of the three games against UNC-Wilmington. The Sycamores will visit Illinois on Tuesday in a 4 p.m. EDT start before starting Missouri Valley Conference action at Evansville next weekend. UNC-Wilmington fell to 8-10.
A.J. McElderry picked up his first victory of the season in Saturday’s opener as he pitched to just one batter but got that batter to hit into a double play.
Indiana State found itself down 3-0 after the first inning.
The Sycamores came back in the top of the second as Brian Romero led off with a single and advanced to second when Tyler Wampler was hit by a pitch. Jeff Zahn singled with the runners moving up and Romero scoring as the Seahawks shortstop’s throw to first got past the first baseman. Derek Hannahs put down a perfect sacrifice bunt to score Wampler and cut the UNCW lead to one.
ISU tied the score in the third as Landon Curry and Cody Zimmerman hit back-to-back singles to lead off the inning. Mike Fitzgerald picked up his team-leading 13th RBI of the season with a single to score Curry with the tying run.
The Seahawks scored a run in the sixth to go back on top 4-3, but the Sycamores came back again to knot the score in the seventh. Curry led off with a walk and came around to score on Cody Zimmerman’s RBI double.
Down 5-4, the Sycamores took control of the game in the top of the eighth inning, pushing across five runs on five hits to take a 9-5 lead. Wampler led off with a single and went to second after Zahn was hit by a pitch. Derek Hannahs had an infield single to load the bases and Connor McClain singled to right center to score Wampler with the tying run.
Curry followed with a bases-clearing double to left center to put the Sycamores up 8-5. The Sycamore shortstop went to third as Zimmerman flew out to right and scored on a triple to right center by Hayes.
ISU capped its scoring in the top of the ninth after Zahn singled and Hannahs walked. McClain pushed both runners up with a sacrifice bunt and both scored on a single to right by Curry.
The Sycamores had a season-high 17 hits and tied their season high of 11 runs in the game.
Zimmerman finished the game with a double and three singles in six trips to the plate. Curry tied his career game high with five RBIs on a double and two singles. Romero, Zahn, and Hannahs each had two singles with Jacob Hayes belting a triple.
In the second game, Kurt Kudrecki was the winning pitcher (3-1) as he went 61⁄3 innings in allowing a run on seven hits while striking out six and walking two.
Hayes led the Sycamores’ offense with a triple and a double, while Steen added a pair of singles.
