Preps: Late free throws help Linton beat North Knox

BICKNELL — Linton hit 4 of 5 free throws in the final minute and hung on to defeat streaking North Knox 47-46 in the semifinals of the Class 2A North Knox Sectional for boys high school basketball.

The decision ended an 11-game winning streak by North Knox, which finished 15-8.

The Miners (18-6) will play South Knox (17-5) at 7 p.m. today in the sectional championship game.

Seniors Beau Eaton and Bryant Jackson hit both free throws of one-and-ones late to secure the victory. Linton led by as many as nine points in the fourth quarter, but North Knox crawled within one in the final half-minute.

The Warriors got off two 3-point attempts in the final six seconds, but both careened off the backboard.

Eaton scored 16 short-range points in benefiting from the assist work of Joe Dieball, Josh Dieball and Ryan Woodward. Jackson added 14 points.

North Knox hit only 6 of 23 attempts from 3-point range against the Linton zone.

South Knox beat Eastern Greene 62-55 in the second semifinal game Friday.

Class 4A

Avon -- Brownsburg and Martinsville vie for the championship at this site.

Brownsburg needed overtime to subdue Mooresville 50-47 and the Artesians defeated Avon 68-56.

Class 2A

South Putnam -- Covenant Christian and Speedway will vie for the championship.

Covenant Christian bested Monrovia 51-40 and Speedway defeated North Putnam 87-45. Speedway handed Cloverdale its second loss to gain the semis.

Fountain Central -- The host Mustangs will face Southmont in the finals.

Fountain Central beat Seeger 67-45 and Southmont edge Clinton Central 62-60.

Class A

White River Valley -- Clay City is back in the finals and will meet Bloomfield, back in Class 1A this season.

Bloomfield ousted Eminence 48-24 and the Eels sidelined the host Wolverines 53-46 in overtime.

Bloomfield won the Greene County Invitational in January while the Eels lost only to Cloverdale in their last seven games.
