Rex fall to Danville in 10th inning

TERRE HAUTE — The Danville Dans took advantage of Terre Haute Rex errors and walks Monday night to pull out a 5-2 win in extra innings in Prospect League baseball at Bob Warn Field.

Danville snapped the 2-2 tie with a three-run 10th inning off losing pitcher Nate Arnold. With the loss, the Rex (14-8) were one game behind Quincy (14-6) in the West Division race.

Rex starter Kurt Kudrecki and Danville’s Spencer Herrmann controlled the game into the sixth. Kudrecki gave up four hits and one run through five innings before being replaced by Kyle Zimmerman in the fifth with the score tied 1-1.

The Rex managed just five hits off Herrmann and winning pitcher Trey McNickle (3-0). Nate Arnold was the losing pitcher.

Kyle Kempf, Tyler Wampler, Rickey Sanchez, Owen Conway and Atlee Schwab each had one hit for the Rex. Schwab came through with an RBI double in the fourth.

Kempf legged out an infield single in the 10th to extend his hitting streak to 18 games. The center fielder was batting a .365, ranking third in the Prospect League at the time.

Danville’s 11-hit offense was led by catcher Taylor Banks with three hits, including two doubles.

Danville got the first three hits of the game and scored the first run. The Dans’ nine-hole hitter Sam Maus and lead-off hitter Jacob Thomas connected for back to back singles to right field. Maus score on an infield groundout.

After three scoreless and hitless innings, the Rex connected for two hits and a game-tying run in the fourth.

Sanchez drove a groundball between third base and shortstop for the Rex first hit. Sanchez caught the Dans by surprise stealing second base and moved to third on a grounder to the right side of the infield and scored when Atlee Schwab doubled into the right-center field gap.

The Dans took a 2-1 lead in the sixth on a walk, single and Banks’ second double of the night.

The Rex tied the score 2-2 in the sixth when Wampler led off with a single, stole second and scored when the Dans misplayed Evans hard-hit ball to second.

The Rex visited Quincy, Ill., for a doubleheader Tuesday to start a three-game series.
