Springfield, Ill. —
Two former Vigo County high school baseball players played big roles Wednesday night as the Terre Haute Rex regained first place in the West Division of Prospect League baseball with an 8-2 win over the Springfield Sliders.
Terre Haute North graduate John Robert Patterson pitched five shutout innings before being relieved in the sixth and got the win, while West Vigo graduate Tyler Wampler had two hits, two runs and three RBIs.
Coupled with Quincy’s 6-5 loss in the first game of a doubleheader at Danville, the Rex are back in first place.
Terre Haute broke the scoreless tie in the top of the fifth when Wampler was hit by a pitch and scored on the first of two doubles by Nate Arnold.
Wampler had a two-run single, Arnold another RBI double and Evan Heptig a run-scoring single during a five-run sixth-inning rally, and the Rex padded the lead in the top of the ninth on a triple by Brian Wolfe, singles by Owen Conway and Zack Evans and Wampler’s run-scoring grounder.
The Rex had 15 hits for the game. They play tonight at Danville.
