METRO ROUNDUP: Hutson comes home, has personal best

TERRE HAUTE — Kylie Hutson returned to her home town Saturday to set a personal outdoor record, clearing 15-feet-5 in highlighting the Sycamore Open pole vault competition at Marks Field.

The Terre Haute North graduate and four-time national champion at ISU got her milestone on her final attempt, then just missed on three attempts at 15-7 — a mark she has cleared indoors.

Hutson, the 2011 USATF outdoor champion, will be looking for her second national title as a professional this week when she competes Sunday in the 2013 USATF Championships in Des Moines.

Former Sycamore Vera Schmitz was second in women’s elite competition over the weekend at 14-71⁄4 Also competing was Indiana State sophomore Kimyanna Rudolph, who tied for fifth at 12-111⁄2. She will also be in Des Moines, competing Friday.

Recent ISU graduates Nicole Hope and Richelle Kimble also competed, Hope clearing 12-111⁄2 and Kimble 12-51⁄2.

• U12 Flyers win championship, earn ranking — The Terre Haute Flyers U12 Purple girls team finished its season with a 9-1 record, winning the Indiana Soccer League’s Premier Southern Division over teams from Evansville, Columbus, New Albany and Center Grove.

With a 19-2 overall record, the team was ranked fifth in the state and scored 82 goals for the season while allowing just 17. It won the Midwest Soccer Classic at home and traveled to win the Portage Soccer Classic.

U12 Purple girls — Audrey Baker, Megan Benefiel, Amani Brown, Sarah Chatman, Elizabeth Humphrey, Audrea Kearschner, Kate Ming, Brittney Nikirk, Orian Roshel, Camryn Wilkey, Sydney Woodason. Joining the team for tournaments were Olivia Holman, Erin Thomas and Grace Williams. Coach was Stacy Clough.


• Amateur begins — At South Bend, the first round of the Indiana State Amateur was played Monday at the South Bend Country Club.

With most of the field in, former South Knox golfer Adam Schenk was in the lead. The all-Big 10 player shot 67.

South Vermillion grad Logan Burdick, now at Wabash College, was tied for 23rd with 73.

Two Terre Haute players qualified for the 113th Amateur. Thomas Goss carded 82 and Sam Pollock had 85.

• Jones, McIntosh honored — At New Castle, Sullivan’s Caelan Jones and Indiana State recruit Bryant McIntosh of Greensburg won individual awards during the weekend at the Indiana Class Basketball All-Star Classic.

Jones won the Kent Benson Fellowship of Christian Athletes Mental Attitude for her team in Saturday’s 2A/1A junior girls game, and McIntosh was named Most Outstanding Player in one of Friday’s junior boys games.

Auto racing

• Juniors in action — Junior dragsters from the midwest were in action at Crossroads Dragway for three days with rain halting action Sunday.

One of the winners was Clayton Stultz of Terre Haute.

Fun Night runs are slated Friday. Regular racing is Saturday with a Jegs Super Quick 500 race. Time trials begin at 2 p.m.
