TERRE HAUTE — Wayne Newton Post 346 outhit Evansville Pate 11-6 Saturday evening at Terre Haute North High School. But Post 346 also committed more errors and gave up more base on balls, and that was the difference.

“Walks and errors will haunt you. But tomorrow is another day,” Post 346 manager John Hayes said after losing to Pate 6-3 in the American Legion Invitational baseball tournament.

Post 346 (7-2) will play Evansville Pate again today at 2:30 p.m. at North and the winner advances to the championship game.

Post 346 had 11 hits in the game, led by Cody Brock with a single and double and T.J. Decker and Nathan Will with two singles each.

Evansville Pate had six hits, led by Grant Buckley with two. Pate also got doubles from Heath Spindler and A.J. Bruner and a triple from leadoff hitter Blake Hicks.

Post 346 pitchers Austin Hicks and Sam Wolfe gave up six runs, but only one of them was earn. They walked a combined six batters while the defense committed three errors.

Pate took a 2-1 lead in the second inning without a hit. An error and a bases loaded walk accounted the Evansville’s early lead.

Pate made it 5-1 in the third inning a base hits by Corey Mason and Buckley and the help of three walks and a Post 346 error.

“We’ve been pretty good [fielding], but tonight was one of those nights,” Hayes said.

Post 346 couldn’t get that timely hit either, leaving 11 runners on the base.

Brock led off the 346 second inning with a single and moved around to third on an Evansville throwing error off Will’s groundball. Lane Dransfield drove in Brock with a single.

Dransfield’s hit also moved Will to third base and he was stranded there. Terre Haute left six runners in scoring position.

While Post 346 hit Evansville’s John Mintzel and seventh-inning reliever Corey Mason, rarely did those hits come together or with runners in scoring position.

“It seems like we can get [runners] to second and third and there are two outs,” Hayes said.

Post 346 scored two runs in the sixth inning when Will singled, moved to second on a passed ball and third on a wild pitch. Connor Pierce was hit by a pitch. Will scored on a sacrifice fly by Jacob Johnson and Pierced came hom on Pete Lannoo’s single.
