Busy times await Wabash Valley golfers

TERRE HAUTE — Golf activity will pick up for Terre Haute players.

The opening Terre Haute Golf Association event is slated this weekend and an open house for the reorganized Terre Haute Junior Golf Association is set for next week.

A two-man event will be played Saturday at Hulman Links with best-ball format and at Rea Park on Sunday with alternate shot.

One of the new events on the schedule is a Hall of Fame Cup on June 28-29 to be played from the blue tees at Hulman Links with a dinner following the first round.

This event will feature a Vigo County team based on top finishers in the 2012 city tourney against players from other courses in the area in  Ryder Cup-style competition. True alternate shot format will be followed the first round and head-to-head matches the second day.

Captains of the teams are Ted Kaperak and Rich Schelsky.

n City tourney in July — The city tourney will be played earlier this year, scheduled for two weekends in July. The senior city will be in August.

n Junior event set — The Terre Haute Junior Golf Association has been reorganized and will have an open house on Wednesday at the Rea Park driving range.

Refreshments will be available with free range balls and a drive-pitch-putt contest from 4 to 6 p.m.

“Although each individual course has some form of junior golf, there has been no formal organized group. In that vein, we are reformulating the Terre Haute Junior Golf Association,” said Dave Kennedy, the pro at Rea Park.

The junior city will be played July 9-11. Dates have been arranged for other events to accomodate soccer and baseball players after their league play ends.

Auto racing

n Larson posts win — At Gas City, Kyle Larson won the opening Indiana Midget Week in dramatic fashion Wednesday at Gas City 1-69 Speedway.

Tracy Hines led 28 of the first 29 laps of the main event but Larson passed him on the final lap to win and then flipped. Larson also was one of the heat winners.

Hines finished second in the feature and Christopher Bell. The second race in the U. S. Auto Club event was Thursday at Lincoln Park Speedway.

It’s called Terre Haute Boys & Girls Club Park now, but the venerable ballpark was the site of some classic high school baseball regional games in the 1970s when coach Don Jennings and Terre Haute North’s local dynasty fought off stiff challenges from the best the rest of the Wabash Valley had to offer.
