TERRE HAUTE —
The fun that the Terre Haute South high school softball team had Saturday — including those five home runs — was all the result of the hard work the Braves had put in before the game, coach Dwayne Stout said after the game.
“[The Braves] worked on their hitting late last night and they came in early this morning to get on the tees again,” the first-year head coach said after a 13-6 victory over visiting Carmel that gives South half of the Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference championship.
Four teams had 5-1 MIC records early Saturday, and two of them still do — Terre Haute North and Center Grove, whose game this coming week will decide the other half of the championship.
Carmel and South were the other two leaders, and it was evident before noon Saturday that the home team was ready.
Jackie Swain’s three-run homer highlighted a five-run first inning for the Braves, then Shelbie Scamihorn and Cheyenne Reinig went back to back in a four-run second inning. Carlee McFarland homered later for South and Swain, who also was the winning pitcher, added her second long ball of the day for good measure.
“It feels great,” said Swain after being asked what a conference champion felt like, “but I couldn’t have done it without my catcher, Shelbie, and my fielding behind me.”
The homers? “I really don’t think I could have done that without my team cheering me when I was at the plate,” Swain added.
While this is Stout’s first season as head coach of the Braves, he’s been involved with the program for awhile — and Saturday’s share of the title seemed a little overdue.
“We’ve been knocking at the door,” he pointed out. “We were second and third the last couple years … it just seemed like we’d always get a bad bounce.”
Now, Stout added, he’d like to see the entire MIC softball championship stay on its western edge.
“Hopefully now North takes one this week over Center Grove,” he concluded.
