RAMBLIN' RECK: Golfer Chad Collins comes up big in Utah

TERRE HAUTE — Chad Collins had a nice weekend playing golf in Utah.

The Cloverdale golfer had rounds of 66-60-68-69 to tie for third in the webcom tour event (Utah Championship) with a 19-under-par 263 score. He had a two-shot lead going into the final round when Steven Alker and Ashley Hall shot 66 and 65, respectively, to tie for first with 262 scores.

Alker won a playoff and took home $112,500.

Collins earned $32,500 and nearly doubled his season winnings, hiking that total to $76,045. He tied his previous best finish, having tied for third in the Mid-Atlantic Championship.

Collins had one eagle and nine birdies in going 36-27 to finish with that 11-under-par 60 score. In his four rounds, Collins had 26 birdies, 38 pars and seven bogeys for a super weekend.

Locally, the first two rounds of the Terre Haute Golf Association/Show-Me’s city championship were played in some of the best conditions, i.e., dry, of the season.

Phillip Myers and Tom Jones are tied for the lead going into the final two rounds. Travis Turpen and Darrell Shouse are tied for third with Ted Kaperak fifth and Chris Cassell sixth, just three shots back of the leaders.

Kaperak has won nine city titles, Jones seven and Cassell one. Turpen, Shouse and Myers all are gunning for their first championships.

Justin Spieth had been playing in PGA Tour events with sponsor exemptions until winning the John Deere Classic. Now, the 19-year-old is eligible for the Fed-Ex playoffs, two years on the tour and the British Open.

In auto racing, Scott Dixon was struggling in IZOD IndyCar Series events until winning three straight races. Now, he is second in the point totals and has a great chance to win another series title.

The driver from New Zealand has always been one of our favorite drivers. We hope he does well.
