TERRE HAUTE — The Terre Haute Rex got off to a great start in the Saturday afternoon doubleheader with Quincy at Bob Warn Field. But the Gems shut down the Rex bats and came from behind for a 5-4 win in the first game.

The Rex had six hits in the opener, but only two after the second inning while losing their fifth straight game.

Cody Gardner led the Rex offense with two hits, while Tyler Wampler, Atlee Schwab, Andrew Cope and Evan Heptig each had one hit.

Starting pitcher Kurt Kudrecki blanked the Gems for five innings and scattered four hits. But over the next four innings, Josh Dove, Ben Mahar and Nate Arnold combined to give up four runs and seven hits.

The Rex led the contest 4-0 through four innings and took a 4-1 lead into the eighth. The Gems got on the scoreboard in the fifth with a walk and two hits and tied the game 4-4 with three runs on three hits in the eighth inning.

Quincy’s Steven Pallares singled to lead off the ninth inning and Thomas Richards beat out a bunt for a single. Pallares moved to third on a sacrifice bunt and scored the winning run on Ryan Light’s sacrifice fly to right field.

The Rex jumped out to a 3-0 lead in the opening half of the first inning with three hits, one walk and a hit batter.

Wampler started the first inning rally with a lead-off walk. Atlee Schwab beat out a hard ground ball in the hole between shortstop and third and the late throw went over the first baseman’s head. As the ball rolled away, Wampler raced over to third base, saw home plate unguarded and scored on a head-first dive for the first run.

Schwab moved over to second on the error, then scored on back-to-back groundballs to second base.

But with two out, the Rex weren’t finished. Cope and Gardner connected for consecutive singles to center field and Arnold walked to load the bases. Owen Conway earned a hard RBI when he was hit by a pitch on the left hand, scoring Cope for the 3-0 lead.

Wampler’s aggressive baserunning put the Rex ahead 4-0 in the second inning. The West Vigo High School product led off with a single, stole second and third and scored when the catcher’s throw to third base sailed into left field.

Terre Haute also fell in the nightcap by a 3-2 count in 10 innings. Quincy scored the winning run in the 10th on a one-out Light double.

The loss put Terre Haute (20-22) nine games behind first-place Danville and 71⁄2 games behind second-place Quincy. The top two teams in each division qualify for the playoffs.
