Terre Haute North rallies, improves to 4-0

TERRE HAUTE — Terre Haute North began a busy week of girls high school basketball Tuesday night on a winning note at the Patriots’ goalery.

The Patriots rallied from a third-period deficit to defeat Bloomington North 51-43 and will take a 4-0 record into Thursday’s game with White River Valley. They will open Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference play with their third home game of the week on Saturday against Carmel.

North had a 13-9 lead after one period and led by nine points twice in the second stanza, leading 25-21 at intermission.

The Cougars ran off 10 straight points to open the third canto to assume a 31-25 advantage. The host team did not have a field goal in the quarter, going 0 for 10, but Layne Curley hit all six free throws she attempted to keep the Patriots close and they trailed 35-31 going into the final frame.

The Patriots opened the final period with an 11-1 run and had a 42-36 lead.

Adrienne Pritchard led the winners with a double-double, grabbing 18 rebounds and scoring 23 points and also had a steal. She had seven of those points in the last quarter.

Curley tallied 16 points and had two steals and three rebounds.

She hit her last eight free throws.

Coach Mike Allen was pleased with the way his team finished the game.

“We faced some adversity, getting down by six points. In the past, we might have folded. Not tonight. We played smart and took care of the basketball,” he said.

Three players were in double figures for Bloomington North, now 0-2. Emma St. John and and Erica Cassidy each had 11 points and Josie Staggs had 10. Staggs also had five steals.

Amanda Carmichael is the first-year coach of the Cougars.

The Patriots had a 40-27 edge on the boards and were good on 21 of 26 from the gratis stripe. They hit 33 percent from the field; Bloomington North was good on 37 percent.

  • Andy Amey: Just a small trip to talk about this time

To paraphrase Carl Spackler, the heavy stuff’s not going to come for quite awhile. So while it’s true that I’m back from a week’s vacation, it’s not time — yet — for the big vacation column. Trips to Noblesville, Brunswick and Reelsville, while providing some nice family time, don’t really have the cachet to fill newspaper space.
