Cayuga — Rockville dominated a Class A Sectional 53 boys high school basketball opponent for the second time this week at North Vermillion on Friday night, routing Turkey Run 85-50 and accomplishing Dave Mahurin’s primary goal.

“We’re in the sectional championship game,” the Rox coach said. “That’s where we wanted to be, and once you get there, teams always feel like they can win it.”

Rockville (24-0) will meet Covington, a 64-47 winner over Attica in Friday’s nightcap, in tonight’s 7:30 championship game.

It didn’t take the undefeated and top-ranked Rox to take control Friday, shooting 75 percent from the field in the first quarter and taking advantage of four Turkey Run turnovers to lead 30-5 at the first stop.

Mahurin replaced normal starters Keiontre Wilkey and Nick Waltz with Cole Griffin and Isaiah Thurman and was pleased with the results.

“We definitely played better in this game than on Tuesday,” Mahurin said of the first-round win over Riverton Parke. “I was so irritated after that game, I made two changes in the starting lineup, and Cole and Isaiah played so well in practice the last two days that I went ahead and let them start.

“We always tell them that if they play well in practice, they’ll get to play,” he continued. “We’ll need them this year and in the future.”

Jordon McFall had 11 of his game-high 21 points in the first quarter and Lane Mahurin chipped in with 10 of his 20.

Leading 18-5, Rockville scored the last 12 points of the period and extended its lead to as much as 40-7 and 47-9 in the second period before leading 48-14 at the half.

The Rox extended their lead to 68-25 after three quarters and used reserves for the remainder of the contest.

Turkey Run scored half of its point total for the night in the final period, getting a pair of 3-pointers from Jake Amstutz and another from Reece Hunt while also getting its younger team members some valuable tournament action.

Eleven of the 12 Rockville players who saw action got into the scoring column, with Thurman adding eight points, Gary Ulrich, Wilkey and John Brown adding six each and Griffin and Waltz chipping in with five each.

Turkey Run was fittingly led in scoring by its two seniors, Riley Sunderman and Jeff Woods, who closed out their careers with 16 and 11 points respectively. Amstutz added 10.
