METRO: ISU softball wins twice

TERRE HAUTE — The Indiana State softball team used two late rallies to sweep the first day of the Bulldog Invitational with a 10-7 win over North Dakota State and a 9-8 eight-inning triumph over Radford on Friday.

“We got two great team wins today,” ISU pitcher Ashli Scott said. “The defense played great behind all three pitchers and competed offensively to get key hits that kept us in both games. We capitalized on the opportunites we had today. It was a fun day to be a Sycamore.”

In the first game, despite trailing 6-2 with two outs in the top of the sixth inning, Indiana State rallied to win.

The Sycamores scored four runs two outs in the top of the sixth. Morgan Allee got the rally started with a walk  and stole second. Alexa Cavin then walked before back-to-back singles by Shelby Wilson and Megan Stone and a reached-on-error scored four runs.

North Dakota State took 7-6 lead, but Indiana State went ahead for good in the top of the seventh by scoring four runs on just one hit.

Kelsey Montgomery led off with a walk and advanced to second on a sacrifice bunt by Allee. Cavin was hit by a pitch before Wilson singled to score Montgomery and tie the score at 7-7. Stone then reached on an error to score Cavin and Wilson and give the Sycamores a 9-7 advantage.

Two batters later, Myers reached on an error to score Stone and give the Sycamores a 10-7 lead.

Stone finished 2 for 5 with three runs batted in and two runs scored, while Wilson went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and three runs scored.

In Game 2, despite being down to their final out, the Sycamores again rallied to force extra innings.

ISU led 6-1 before Radford scored two runs in the fifth and five in the sixth to go on top 8-6.

With two outs in the seventh, the Sycamores got a rally going as Montgomery and Paige Schreiner walked before Abbie Malchow singled to score Montgomery. Allee then hit an RBI single to tie the score.

In the eighth, using international tiebreak rules, Cavin walked and both her and Allee stole second and third with no outs. Wilson then singled to score Allee, giving the Sycamores a 9-8 advantage.

Allee finished this game 3 for 5 at the plate with an RBI, two runs and a stolen base. With her third steal of the day, she moved into a tie for sixth place on the ISU all-time single-season list with 16.

The Sycamores (9-7)  continue play in the Bulldog Classic today when they host No. 23-ranked Georgia at 12:30 p.m. and Radford at 5:30.
