METRO: ISU’s Odum finalist for Lou Henson Award

TERRE HAUTE — Junior guard Jake Odum of Indiana State is among 25 finalists for the 2013 Lou Henson Award, presented annually to the top mid-major player in college basketball, it was announced Monday.  

Odum is averaging a team-best 14.3 points per game, which ranks ninth in the MVC, and his 4.7 assists per game are second in the league. One of the leading candidates for the Larry Bird MVC Player Of The Year Award, Odum is averaging 1.5 steals per game, seventh-best in the league, and he has made 163 free throws this season, which ranks sixth on the ISU single-season list.

Indiana State is 17-11, 9-7 in the MVC, heading into Wednesday’s 7:05 p.m. game in Hulman Center against Drake.

The 2013 Lou Henson Award will be presented at the awards banquet in Atlanta, site of the men’s NCAA Basketball Championship.

Doug McDermott of Creighton and Jackie Carmichael of Illinois State also represent the Missouri Valley Conference on the 25 man list of honorees.

Others are Travis Bader of Oakland, Billy Baron of Canisius, Jerrelle Benimon of Towson, Tommy Brenton of Stony Brook, Ryan Broekhoff of Valparaiso, Isaiah Canaan of Murray State, Will Cherry of Montana, Ian Clark of Belmont, Jake Cohen of Davidson, D.J. Cooper of Ohio University, Matthew Dellavedova of St. Mary’s (Calif.), James Ennis of Long Beach State, Juan’ya Green of Niagara, Tyler Haws of Brigham Young, Momo Jones of Iona, Jamal Olasewere of LIU-Brooklyn, Zeke Marshall of Akron, Ray McCallum of Detroit, Mike Muscala of Bucknell, Augustine Rubit of South Alabama and Taylor Smith of Stephen F. Austin.

• Otters open with wins — At Otter Creek, the Vigo County middle school girls basketball tournaments for sixth- and seventh-grade teams began Monday night with the host teams getting wins.

The sixth-grade Otters downed Woodrow Wilson 37-17 and Chloe Mason scored 14 points for the winners and Amani Brown 11 for the Warriors.

In seventh-grade action, Otter Creek beat Woodrow Wilson 27-20 as Camryn Scott scored nine for the Otters and Taylor Ellis eight for Woodrow Wilson.

Semifinal games are tonight with Otter Creek hosting Sarah Scott and Honey Creek hosting West Vigo. Championship games are Thursday.


• Manaea honored — Indiana State left-hander Sean Manaea has been named Missouri Valley Conference Pitcher of the Week after allowing just one hit and striking out 10 in a six-inning stint Friday against the College of Charleston.

Manaea allowed just five baserunners, none reaching third base, as the Sycamores won the game 3-1. He is now tied for 10th on ISU’s all-time strikeout list with Chris Schaefer (1987-89) with 213.

ISU plays Wednesday at Austin Peay, then has a three-game series at Eastern Kentucky starting Friday.

    Phegley is a third-time All-Star in the International League, while Marshall, Ill., native Derek Eitel was named to his first Triple-A All-Star game. The Rose-Hulman graduate and right-handed relief pitcher for the Reno Aces has put up impressive numbers in the Pacific Coast League. Eitel has a 2.70 earned-run average with 60 strikeouts in 46 2/3 innings for the Diamondbacks’ top minor-league team.

    Thoroughbred races were on Friday’s card to wind up four days of Illinois racing at the Martinsville Agricultural Fair. Horses owned by Bart Baird and Lance and Stacey Holsapple won all six of the thoroughbred races on the card with two other features run for ponies and mules.
