TERRE HAUTE —
New York Giants punter/holder Steve Weatherford, a 2001 graduate of Terre Haute North High School, reportedly will be featured this week on the “NFL Films — What’s Going on Here?” television program.
Vigo County School Corp. superintendent Dan Tanoos, a longtime friend of Weatherford, told the Tribune-Star that the half-hour show will air for the first time at 2:30 p.m. today on ESPN2 and it will be repeated at 4:30 p.m. Friday and 1:30 p.m. Saturday on the NFL Network.
Tanoos, who received a text from NFL Films notifying him of the telecast times, said NFL Films took video footage of Weatherford as he traveled around Terre Haute in the late spring. Tanoos also expects footage to be used of Weatherford cutting up with teammates and performing in games during the 2011 season as the Giants marched to a Super Bowl championship in February 2012 in Indianapolis.
So far in 2012, the 29-year-old Weatherford is averaging 46.2 yards per punt, with eight downed inside the opponents’ 20-yard line. In last Sunday’s 26-3 victory at San Francisco, he punted four times and averaged 49.8 yards per attempt.
Last season, he averaged a career-best 45.7 yards per punt with a long of 62. His longest ever in the NFL was 66 yards in 2009 when he played for the New York Jets.
A former University of Illinois standout, Weatherford began his NFL career with the New Orleans Saints in 2006 before joining the Kansas City Chiefs in 2008, Jacksonville Jaguars in 2008, the Jets in 2009 and the Giants in 2011.
