METRO/PREP ROUNDUP: Stevenson wins Spaghetti Open playoff

Kyle Stevenson finished strong on Sunday to win the Spaghetti Open for the first time at Matthews Park.

He and Rich Schelsky both finished 36 holes with 6-under-par 138 scores and Stevenson birdied the first playoff hole to win in warm, sunny conditions.

Stevenson went 70-68 and was 35-33 in Sunday’s round. “I was four down with three holes to play. I saved par on 16, then birdied 17 and 18,” said Stevenson.

He made about a 6-foot putt for his birdie on 18 while Schelsky just missed making a slightly longer putt that would have given him another Open title in regulation.

“The key for me was just having three bogeys all weekend,” said Stevenson, who had four birdies in Sunday’s round.

Five players had a chance to win with one hole to play as Denny Byram, Dusty Jovanovich and Tom Jones all finished in a tie for third with 5-under-par 139 scores. Defending champ Bob Kyle was sixth.

Jeremy Roehm and Steve Anderson tied for first in the first flight and Steve Marietta and Punk Waldrop tied for first in the third flight. Jim Winning edged Andy Jackson by a shot to win the second flight.

Ben Kiburis is 84 and won the senior championship with scores of 73 and 75. Don Graves was second and Bill Tryon won the senior first flight.

Fish Jovanovich tied for third in the senior division championship flight. He had his first hole-in-one at the course last Sunday, using a 5-iron to ace the 155-yard hole. Witnesses were Dusty Jovanovich and Paul Moulton.

  • Andy Amey: Just a small trip to talk about this time

To paraphrase Carl Spackler, the heavy stuff’s not going to come for quite awhile. So while it’s true that I’m back from a week’s vacation, it’s not time — yet — for the big vacation column. Trips to Noblesville, Brunswick and Reelsville, while providing some nice family time, don’t really have the cachet to fill newspaper space.

The Pacers couldn’t keep waiting around for Lance Stephenson to make up his mind. So on Friday, they went to work. LeBron James is going back to the Cleveland Cavaliers.
James told Sports Illustrated Friday that he’s decided to go home. It’s a move that would have seemed unfathomable four years ago, after the venomous fallout that followed his decision to leave Cleveland for the Miami Heat.
