BRAZIL — Linton got the high school boys golf season off to a good start, nipping Terre Haute North to win the Northview Invitational played at Forest Park on Saturday.

Seven shots separated the first four teams in the event sponsored by Riddell National Bank. The Miners won with 309 with North second at 310. Terre Haute South and Greencastle each carded 316 and the Tiger Cubs took third on fifth score.

Sullivan shot 324 for fifth and Northview had 339 to round out the top six in the 11-team event.

Competition for medalist was just as close as the team race. Cole Bradbury was first with even-par 71 followed by Linton teammate Clayton French and Nathan Pirtle of Sullivan with 72s, Alec Davis of Greencastle with 73, and Evan Perdiew of Terre Haute North and Luke Brotherton of Greencastle with 74s.

Drew Cahill had 75 and Ryan Cahill had 76 to lead South while Keegan Roembke and Dylan Nesty each had 82 to pace the host team.

“I didn’t expect to win. I told our three seniors they had to shoot in the low 70s and they did it. I’m happy. It’s the first time we have won it,” said Linton coach Derek Bradbury.

Cole Bradbury had six birdies and went 34-37 to take medalist honors. “The wind made it tougher than usual,” he said.

French was 34-38 and Pirtle went 36-36. He had four birdies in his round. “It was tough . . . I stayed patient. Overall, I am happy,” said the Sullivan sophomore.

Pirtle and French both were individual qualifiers for the state finals last season.

Davis was the early individual leader. He had four birdies in his 35-38 round.  He and Brotherton are juniors.

“I am pleased especially with the wind and conditions today and the few practices we have had,” said North coach Abe Nasser Jr.

“I was pleased with the scores of our top three players. I know all three left some shots out there. With experience, that will improve,” said South coach Chris Cassell.

Greencastle coach Steve Paquin said his team got a good, solid start to the season. “We haven’t had very good weather to practice,” he said.

North and South both will compete in the Danville (Ind.) Invitational next Saturday at Twin Bridges while Linton and Sullivan are in the Washington Catholic Invitational at Country Oaks and Greencastle vies for honors in the Edgewood Invitational  at Cascades in Bloomington.

North has its first dual match on Tuesday against Southmont at Hulman Links; South and Northview meet Wednesday at Forest Park and Greencastle faces West Vigo on Thursday at Windy Hills.
