Metro/prep roundup: ISU baseball wins 9th straight

The Tribune-Star

---- — The winning streak is now nine for the Indiana State baseball team, which wrapped up a three-game series sweep of the University of New Orleans by an 11-4 score Sunday at Zephyr Field.

Now 9-1, the Sycamores are scheduled to open their home season Tuesday against Eastern Illinois, although weather puts that date in jeopardy.

Brad Lombard won his third straight start, allowing three runs on seven hits in five innings, while A.J. McElderry, Nick Kolarik and Trent Lunsford pitched in relief for the Sycamores on Sunday.

Cody Zimmerman had a single and solo homer, Jacob Hayes a double and single, Derek Hannahs and Landon Curry two hits each and Michael Eberle a grand-slam homer for the ISU offense.

New Orleans loaded the bases with no outs in the bottom of the first, but Lombard limited the damage to one run. Four walks gave ISU the tying run in the top of the second, but the Privateers got two unearned runs in the bottom of the inning.

Zimmerman’s homer in the third cut the lead to 3-2, and Hannahs got a hit and scored when Mike Fitzgerald was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded to tie the game in the fourth.

After Lombard escaped another bases-loaded jam in the bottom of the fifth, ISU took the lead to stay in the top of the sixth. Hits by Hannahs and Curry and a walk to Zimmerman loaded the bases, and Tony Rosselli was hit by a pitch with two out. Eberle then hit his grand slam for an 8-3 lead.

Jones scores 13 for USI — At Evansville, the University of Southern Indiana opened Great Lakes Valley Conference Tournament play Sunday with an 86-78 win over Maryville (Mo.).

Ben Jones of Robinson had 13 points for the winners.
