Linton's defense causes West Vigo problems

Miners improve to 15-5 with win over Vikings

LINTON — West Vigo ran into a Linton boys high school basketball team Tuesday night that played like a contender to return to the Class 2A state championship game.

The Miners hit 26 of 45 shots from the floor and dominated the Vikings with their defense en route to a 71-42 win.

Linton (15-5) opened the contest in a physical half-court trap that took everything away from West Vigo. The Miners led 18-10 at the first stop.

That included a four-point play by Ryan Woodward.

Linton led 44-15 at halftime, holding the Vikings scoreless for 4 minutes and seven seconds in the second quarter.

West Vigo committed 23 turnovers for the game as Linton jumped into the passing lanes out of the trap.

“We’ve had a problem all year with turnovers and [the Miners] were in a very good half-court trap. They were excellent at it and we did not take care of the ball at all and that is why we were down [29 points] at halftime,” West Vigo coach Joe Boehler said.

West Vigo was led by junior Alex West, who came off the bench the second half to score 12 points and grabbed seven rebounds. The Vikings finished the regular season 6-14.

Linton, with four players in double figures, was led by Beau Eaton with 14 points, Ryan Woodward with 13, Bryant Jackson with 11 and Joe Dieball with 10.

When Linton relaxed the defensive pressure in the third quarter West Vigo put together a rally.

West, who did not play the first half by “coaches’ decision,” scored 10 points in the third quarter and the Vikings cut the margin to 20 points, 55-35, going into the fourth period.

Linton increased its margin to the final 29 points over the last eight minutes.

“I don’t know how many people you’re going to beat making 23 turnovers,” Boehler said.
