Staff report
The Tribune-Star

TERRE HAUTE — Nicky Wheeler scored both goals and goalkeeper Lucinda Combs enabled her team to overcome a 15-6 deficit in shots Tuesday evening as Rose-Hulman defeated visiting Earlham 2-1 in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference women’s soccer.

Rose clinched a spot in the HCAC postseason tournament with the victory.

Wheeler scored in the 15th minute, but Earlham’s Annie Frodeman tied the score just before intermission.

Wheeler got her team-leading seventh goal of the season in the 76th minute, however, a score set up by Helena Bomber, and the Engineers improved to 10-4-4 overall, 6-2 in conference play. Earlham is 2-11-2 and 1-6-1.

Final regular-season match for the Engineers is a 1 p.m. home contest Saturday against Manchester.

Engineers sweep CCIW honors — Ellie Hong and Orion Martin enabled Rose-Hulman to get both the Swimmer of the Week Awards from the College Conference of Illinois and Wisconsin that were announced Tuesday.

Hong set a school record in 100-yard backstroke on Friday against Millikin, then bettered it on Saturday when she won the event at the Indiana Intercollegiates at Purdue. Hong beat four Division I competitors in that race, and also won the 200 freestyle in the Millikin meet.

Martin won the 100 freestyle against Millikin, then placed twice at Purdue — fourth in 100 butterfly, 10th in 50 freestyle. The only swimmers to beat him in butterfly at Purdue were all from the host team.

The Rose men compete Friday at Wabash, and both teams host Illinois Wesleyan on Saturday.

Engineer women picked seventh — Rose-Hulman has been picked to finish seventh in Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference women’s basketball.

The 2013-14 coaches’ preseason poll was released Tuesday, with defending regular-season champion Transylvania picked to repeat.

Winning at Transylvania was a highlight for last year’s Rose team that finished 12-14 overall, 8-10 in conference play. The Engineers reached the conference tournament for the third straight year and eighth in 10 seasons with their sixth-place finish.

Four starters and nine letterwinners return from that team, including leading scorer Kelsey Ploof (10.7 points, 9.2 rebounds per game).

Transylvania, with 94 points and seven first-place votes, is followed in the preseason rankings by Franklin (89, 2), Hanover (79, 1), Defiance (65), Manchester (60), Bluffton (50), Rose-Hulman (46), Earlham (28), Anderson (25) and Mount St. Joseph (14).

The Rose-Hulman season opener is Nov. 15, a 7:30 p.m. home game against IU-South Bend.

“We played really soft today and got beat by every [Missouri] Valley team,” coach Greg Towne. “Even though it was only a shot or two, it is exactly how the MVC will be this spring. We seem to be happy shooting mid-70s even though our skill level is better than that.”

Uradomo followed up her opening-round 71 with a 74 on Tuesday. The 145 was her career low for 36 holes.
