PREP ROUNDUP: Terre Haute South tennis tops West Vigo

TERRE HAUTE — Terre Haute South’s No. 1 doubles duo of Reed Crawford and Trace Harruff didn’t lose a game as the Braves blanked host West Vigo 5-0 in boys high school tennis.

Singles — Krishan Kumar (THS) def. Kyle Watson 6-1, 6-1; Scott Kellar (THS) def. Blake Benefiel 6-2, 6-2; Alec Fair (S) def. Logan Benefiel 6-1, 6-2.

Doubles — Reed Crawford-Trace Harruff (THS) def. Tyson Tolerson-Jacob Whitford 6-0. 6-0; Kyle Jackson-Ben Volkers def. Grant Kirby-Michael Vermillion 6-1, 6-3.

JV — South won 2-1.

Next — West Vigo (16-2) will play Saturday in the Northview Invitational.

In other boys high school tennis Thursday:

• Terre Haute North 5, Northview 0 — At Brazil, North’s No. 1 doubles team of juniors Keaton Akers and Justin Newton improved its record to 15-4 with a victory over the host Knights.

Singles — Andrew Farmer (THN) def. Gaddis Baysinger 6-1, 6-0; Harry Williams (THN) def. Bryce Minor 6-2, 6-0; Grant Potts (THN) def. Ethan Linton 6-0, 6-0.

Doubles — Keaton Akers-Justin Newton (THN) def. Kyle Moore-Damon Bass 6-1, 6-0; Lucas Davis-Andrew Colbert (THN) def. Brenden Ellis-Nick Ganly 6-0, 6-0.

JV — North won 2-1.

Next — North (5-7) will compete Saturday at Indianapolis North Central and Brebeuf.

• South Putnam 5, Linton 0 — At Putnamville, South Putnam’s Josh Stewart won 6-0, 6-0 at No. 3 singles to help the host Eagles secure the victory.

Singles — Tyler Long (SP) def. Mitchell Cox 6-1, 6-2; Collin Berry (SP) def. Zack McGill 7-5, 7-5; Josh Stewart (SP) def. Jayden Burgess 6-0, 6-0.

Doubles — Trey Moore-Jake Carmichael (SP) def. Dalton Van Patten-Rain Foster 6-1, 6-0; Mason Sollman-Zane Crosby (SP) won by default.

Next — Linton (0-15) will play Monday at White River Valley.


• Riverton Parke 3, North Vermillion 1 — At Mecca, Shelby Benell posted 13 kills to help the host Panthers notch a Wabash River Conference victory.

    After dropping a pair of games to Missouri Baptist on Wednesday, Saint Mary-of-the-Woods beat Lindenwood-Belleville 9-7 and 1-0, both games in eight innings, on Thursday afternoon.
    Sarah Burnham’s seventh-inning homer in the first game tied the score 4-4, and the Pomeroys took a 5-4 lead later in the inning on an RBI double by Brooke Jordan before the Lynx tied the score in the bottom of the inning.

  • METRO ROUNDUP: ISU softball splits pair in Florida

    Pitching dominated Tuesday’s opening day of play in the Rebel Spring Games for the Indiana State softball team, which defeated Bucknell 2-0 before falling 2-0 to Creighton.
    “The girls did a great job in the first game getting a couple runs,” ISU coach Shane Bouman said. “We leaned on [sophomore] Yvette Alvarez who pitched really well. We probably got as much as we could out of her and probably should have changed earlier so put that on me. We have a couple little things we can clean up and get a little better and we will be ready to go tomorrow.”

    The Cream team at Saturday’s Cream and Crimson intrasquad game had Indiana’s top returning rusher and receiver and the Hoosiers’ top-rated passer from last season.
    No surprise, then, that Tevin Coleman, Shane Wynn and Tre Roberson guided the Cream to a resounding 24-14 win over the Crimson.

    Host Rose-Hulman came back from an early six-run deficit in the first game Saturday and went on to a 13-12, 7-1 Heartland Collegiate Athletic Conference baseball sweep over Mount St. Joseph.
    The wild opener featured a Rose-Hulman comeback from an 8-2 deficit and included 18 hits and two school records for the Engineers.

    Yvette Alvarez’s one-hit shutout capped a dominant day of pitching Saturday as Indiana State swept a Missouri Valley Conference softball doubleheader at Missouri State by scores of 6-1 and 4-0.
    “We pitched well,” coach Shane Bouman said. “Both Taylor Lockwood in the first game and Yvette Alvarez in the second game threw great. When you pitch good and you play good defense and get some key hits, good things are going to happen.
