PREP ROUNDUP: TH North softball sweeps home twinbill

TERRE HAUTE — Terre Haute North opened the Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference portion of its 2013 high school softball schedule with two hard-fought home victories Saturday.

Against Lawrence North, Lorrie LaTourette hit a three-run homer in the third inning en route to a 4-1 triumph.

Then the Patriots needed a two-run walk-off homer in the bottom of the seventh by Katie Herrick to edge Warren Central 7-6.

Terre Haute North 004 000 0 — 4 8 3

W — Crick, 5-0. L — Heyman. HR — THN: LaTourette (2).

Highlights — For North, Lorrie LaTourette hit her second homer of the season, a 3-run shot in the 4th inning, and Jessica Will and Conner Nelson each doubled.

Warren Central      100 203 0 — 6 11 1

Terre Haute North 013 010 2 — 7 6 5

W — Crick, 6-0. L — Wrightsman. HR — THN: Allen (2), Sykes (1), Herrick (1)

Highlights — For North, Katie Herrick hit a no-out, two-run homer (her 1st of the season) in the bottom of the 7th inning to win the game; Jazmine Allen (2) and Sierra Sykes (1) also homered; and Allie McKinney doubled.

Next — North (8-1 overall, 2-0 MIC) will travel to Rockville on Monday.

In other high school softball Saturday:

* Vikings lose two tough ones — At Vincennes, West Vigo lost to Washington 2-1 and to South Knox 7-5 in the South Knox Tournament.

West Vigo     000 001 00 — 1 3 2

W — Lemon. L — Harden, 4-2.

Highlights — For Washington, winning pitcher Lenon hit 2 solo homers for its only runs.

West Vigo     102 101 0 — 5 6 2

South Knox   004 300 x — 7 7 4

W — Keller. L — Morrison, 1-2.

Highlights — For West Vigo, Ciara McClain went 2 for 4, Shelby Edington singled, knocked in a run and scored a run and Leah Morrison went 1 for 2.

Next — West Vigo (5-4) will be at home Tuesday to take on Sullivan.

Baseball

* South posts two shutouts — At Indianapolis, Pete Lannoo and Cody Brock pitched shutouts as visiting Terre Haute South swept a Metropolitan Interscholastic Conference doubleheader at Warren Central by scores of 14-0 and 10-0.

Preston Tofaute was 5 for 6 for the day, including a triple and a homer.
